Power outages reported in Northeast, including New York City, and other cities including Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan:(
The looters will have blast :(
Major power failure across Northeast
Toronto, Detroit also affected by unexplained blackout
BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC AND NBC NEWS
Aug. 14 — A major power blackout hit several major cities in the Northeast, the Midwest and Canada late Thursday afternoon, knocking out electricity to millions of people in New York, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland and elsewhere.
THE BLACKOUT, which sent thousands of New Yorkers streaming into the streets and briefly knocked television networks off the air, could not be immediately explained. Most of the cities are linked on the same regional power grid, however.
MSNBC TV showed aerial pictures of fires in the Bronx and Brooklyn. CNN reported that a fire had been reported at the Consolidated Edison plant in New York.
The evening rush hour was just beginning, and NBC correspondents described scenes of pandemonium.
Officials of the Homeland Security Department said they had no immediate information on the blackout, which struck cities stretching from Hartford, Conn., and Syracuse, N.Y., west to Detroit and Cleveland and north to northwest Ontario. The entire city of Toronto was affected, MSNBC television reported.
Much of New England, however, including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut, were unaffected.

A little more history for the young uns. In 1965 I was in Illinois in Tech School. We weren`t affected but my family was. No big problems except 9 months later a lot of babies were born in NYC. :what: :D
In 1977 I was laid off the NYPD. There were riots all over the place. One of the hardest areas hardest hit was Broadway in Brooklyn. I was working for a friend of mine who`s uncle owned (key word here, owned:cuss: ) a liquor store on Broadway. He along with just about every other merchant was burned out.
My wife`s family`s block was burned to the ground. Luckily they had moved sometime before.
I myself was sitting in my friend`s warehouse. I`d be lying if I said I had a 1911A1 since I didn`t have a CCW. Of course we were located next to the Mafia Cement Co.

My fellow Americans,
Today, we find ourselves suffering a power outage that is blanketing the Northeast. My reccommendation to all Americans is "Deal with it".
Continue your day to day activities as best you can and know that this is not a terrorist related incident.
If this were a terrorist related incident, my reccommendation to the American people is "Deal with it".
We are Americans. We are the strongest, most stalwart, most admired, and most envied people on the face of the Earth. We must continue to act accordingly.
So, deal with it.
God Bless America.

Well I find it interesting that they are debunking the terrorist potencial so quickly and without all the facts in.
I've not heard of power outages effecting this many cities at once.
But I'm not familiar with this "1965 and 1977"?? what kind of outages went on there.
While I'll agree its probably doubtfull that its a terrorist related incident.
It could be a training event for what is intended to truly take place.
It could take days/weeks/or even years to tell if it was a "hack" that caused it.
While its hot and people are without power of course the feds and local government are going to say. No biggie folks its just a simple outage.
If anything it shows the badguys how vulnerable the power grids are.

I'll agree its probably doubtfull that its a terrorist related incident
That certainly seems to be the case for now- but I wouldn't count it out completely.
FNC had a nuclear plant guy on- he said even if this isn't terrorist related it presents a target of opportunity for them. Seems the nuclear power plants, one of which isn't far from NYC, depend on external power sources (electricity) for cooling. If the external power source goes down, they switch to internal power sources- diesel generators. If those internal power sources are taken out- that could lead to melt down. He said he hoped that the security at the nuke plants was being beefed up- haven't heard anything about this, and the FNC folks seemed to get the guy off the air in a hurry- maybe they didn't like him giving suggestions.
Lots of folks live in high rises in NYC- when night falls and they all get home with no AC, no elevators and 87 degree temperatures- well I hope for the best for them.
Oddly, my section of this city was w/o power Tuesday for about 5 hours.

The sad thing is it's a wonder there aren't more of them. Generating capacity has to cover bigger areas. If an overload happens in the start or the middle of a power grid things fall rapidly. Until we get more capacity online things like this will be common. Too little doing too much without any backup.

Yeah, we will... but even Californiacs have to pay for New Yawk's debt sprees. There's just something magic about the Rotten Apple.
We can console ourself with the knowledge that paying for Federal aid is painful, but receiving it is lethal. Look at Washington, D.C. (over $17,000 per pupil in their public schools!), the Marshal Plan (it was England and France that got most of the money... Germany actually paid net reparations!), the Warsaw Pact, etc. etc. etc. If New York wants to join the list of "successful" aid programs then just be glad they're dumb enough to take the money.
We're getting off easy.

I was just watching the video of the incredible mass of humanity trying to get out of NYC. Already reports of jacked up prices, even water. Didn't look to orderly to me with people blocking traffic, climbing over cars etc. I was thinking how lucky some of us are in preparing for such an occurrence by having a backpack in our vehicle and certain items on our person. I am not sure who scares me more. I don't know if it is folks like 2dogs who see terrorism and conspiracy under every rock or folks like many of the people in New York City who actually believed the government both times in the past when it was claimed that such power outages could not happen again.
Default assumpts on innuendo to such events as being terrorist-related is hugely alarmist and not terribly productive. As noted by several others previously, these things usually happen for reasons OTHER than intentional terrorist reasons. Power outages and major blackouts have a well established history of happening for reasons other than intentional damage.
No 2dogs, it isn't WWIII and this does not fit your theory on the other thread that WWIII will start in September.
Between terrorists and paranoid gun folks, the terrorists often come out looking like they are working through well reasoned plans contrary to the paranoid gun folks. The significant difference is that the terrorists are evil and the paranoid gun folks have good intentions, but both may get you killed.

I am not sure who scares me more. I sure do: the average New Yorker who, based on reports in this thread, acts as if its the end of the world because there's no electricity and they have to walk and suffer a little heat.
What happened to the brave folks of 9/11 who banded together in the face of terrorism? Here it seems that they're pretty much unable to cope with a simple power outage. It may be bad media coverage, so I may be wrong...
What scares me are people who venture out into the world, ESPECIALLY NY'ers, without even the most rudimentary of tools: a flashlight or two (heck, you can buy indestructible, bright LED lights that are small enough to carry several very easily) a knife and/or multitool, and (I know this won't fly in NY, but...) a firearm. Idiots.
People like that scare me because they are unprepared, mentally and tool-wise, for whatever life throws at them. People who are unprepared panic and generally do not help bad situations.
Double Naught, be fair now; I hardly think 2dogs sees "terrorism and conspiracy under every rock." He just isn't ruling it out, and I'm not either. I place terrorism as a cause of this very low on the list, but I haven't checked it off. If that makes me paranoid, so be it.

Dr. Jones, given everything that I'm seeing on the news, I'd have to say that a reaction like that would have been from an ATYPICAL New Yorker.
Relatively peaceful night, with normal levels of crime, virtually no looting, and hardly any public disturbances.
The 1977 riots were truly an aberation -- a period of serious economic malaise for the city & people of New York, low to no expectations for the future, etc.

"But still, the little news I have read in the morning's paper and in some online snippets portray people as simply not knowing what to do with themselves."
yeah, and I think that's to be expected. Virtually every facet of life in a large city is dependent on electricity one way or another.
There's not much to be done. Sit around, talk to people, try to find something to eat or drink (which can be hard), and/or try to find some place to sleep.
There was a great picture on the front page of the Times this morning taken at dawn of hundreds of people sleeping on the steps of the NY Public Library (I think it was the library).
I'd have to say that the exact same thing happened to a large degree on 9-11, only it simply wasn't reported because there was other news drowning it out.
In a situation like a power outage, though, there simply isn't as much for people to do.
