first off, i'm gonna post a link to what got me going on this thought line....

Gentleman over on greybeard outdoor forum posted this (http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=15665) and if he's seriously gonna sell that rifle for that price, and it's as good a deal as i THINK it may be (i'm in NO way an expert there!! for all i know with that round count the barrel may be shot out and, so it may be a crappy price i don't know). maybe someone can benefit from it b/c currently i can't (too poor)

Now seeing the above post brought me back around to an idea i'd been bouncing around for a good bit, ie that as part of the collection of US issue rifles that i plan to build that i wanted "service rifle" match variations of both the AR and the M-14/M-1A. such a set up seems fairly straightforward for the AR, but not so much so in the case of the M-1A/14 type.

so, (for my future reference) my question is this. what is the best way to get a decent match grade M-1A?? i'm guessing that there are better ways than just buying what SA sells off the shelf. and would like more information.

any info and advice is appreciated.

thank you for your time :)

I bought a match shooter's spare M1A and got quite a gun.

That price is about what I see people asking for target M1As. I've seen a few rifles with fewer bells and whistles advertised for around $1,100.

The M1A is one of the best rifles around IMO. It has what I call "a real rifle feel." Mine is the most accurate and most consistent rifle I own.

Overall Detritus, it sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

Without more specifics though, it's really hard to judge.

By the way, give Captain Carrot and Commander Vimes my best.

Goldarnit, someone buy that before I get out my charge card!

(kidding - my M1A receiver is en route to Krieger and my McMillan order went in today - I'm set... )

I wonder who built it? There's more than barred and receiver lugging to a good shooting M1A. The good tuners will mate the rear sight mechanisims so that you get beautifully repeatable clicks, tune the gas tube, lap the bolt and half a dozen othher things. If its built by a good builder, grab it, and USE IT.

I know Redial from the boards. He's an ex-Marine and in my experience. a straight shooter. 1300 is a great price for a well done double lugged gun. But you really want to have a double lugged gun carefully checked over for weld integrity before you buy. There are good ones, then there are "others".
