Hi,
I have a 1977 Wingmaster Police and would like to refinish the wood. Is it difficult or does it require special tools to remove the forend?
Thanks.

There is a tool for removing the forend. I was able to use a pair of needlenose pliers to remove mine, but mine had already been taken off once before. The nut holding the forend on has two slots for pins to fit down into, then turn the nut.

Brownells sells the the wrench you need. Otherwise you can just go at the wood with the operating arms atached ( they give you a nice place to hold when spraying laquer).

If the forend nut hasn't been tightened down over the years, it might be loose enough to un screw it with your fingers.

Buy the tool from Brownells. If you try using a screwdriver or needlenose pliers you're going to mar the forend retention nut. It's not that expensive and it will save you alot of time and grief.

Great advice. I'd further it, and suggest you buy an actual forend wrench, and not some jury-rigged thing off of eBay. Just get the real wrench up front to do it, and you'll be happy.

GDW, yea thats it.. Man thats expensive.. 1 1/2" putty knife will work... I have a "T" forend tool that came with my express that works like a charm. I did a google search for the one I have but can't find it, if someone can find it i'm sure it cant be more then $10 (if that)...
I took a picture of the forend tool I have (on the right) (left is a choke tube tool).. Now you can see how a putty knife would work, or anything of that shape..

Yes, I thought $50 was too much. I have plenty of putty knives around. Thanks for the input.

go into the garage and you'll eventually find something to make the nut turn...I think I ended up using a long, skinny hole punch.

I cut a piece of an l bracket that was the thickness of the slot and used vice grips to turn the metal. Works like a charm

I did like 1moa@500. I used a piece of 1/8" x 3/4" steel stock from Home Depot (about $4, IIRC). I cut a piece to the appropriate length, cleaned up the ends and clamped it in a pair of vice grips to turn the part. It worked easily, and if you're careful you can avoid damaging the forearm.

Here are a few videos that might help you through the process. They are for the express but I am assuming the process should be the same for the Wingmaster.

I use a piece of PVC pipe that I cut down to leave two prongs that engage the slots. Used the same one for 20 years now.
