Background Check For Long Guns?

I bough a 870 HD shotgun, with a 18 inch barrel and a 7 shot capacity, and was surprised when I had to fill out the background check form as I had done in the past when purchasing a handgun. I thought there was no background checks for long guns. Is this new? For reference, I live in PA.

Background checks on all firearms purchased from licensed dealers (and in some cases, other sources - such as from private persons at gun shows) have been required since the 94 Brady Law went into effect.

It's been that way going on 10 years when Brady II kicked in.
First four years, it was handguns only. Then in 1998, Brady I was about to expire and the Demonrats in Congress realized the FBI hadn't put together a plan for background checks. They cobbled together NICS and, naturally, Slick signed it into law which added rifles and shotguns to the mix.

In PA you need to go through the NICS and the PICS when you buy from an FFL.
Face to face with long guns between two individuals you do not.
