My husband just bought a ruger .454 alaskan, and i'd like to surprise him with a resetting steel target. Does anyone know of any targets for this caliber?

Since the .454 Alaskan's muzzle velocity can exceed 1200 feet per second and the bullets are heavy, typical steel targets made for pistols will tend to be pitted or torn up, depending on the design and the alloy used. Something made for centerfire rifles would be more appropriate, and even then they'd have to be made of AR400 or other good, hard steel. I've hit AR400 at 1900 feet per second, and light pitting occurred with every hit, so that should be adequate for lesser velocities as long as it's heavy enough to take the momentum of the big bullets. Any of the common steel pistol targets you can typically buy through catalogs or at gun stores will be destroyed in very short order. They must be specifically made for the big cartridges.

You should also be familiar with the safety rules concerning the use of steel targets.

LaRue's got auto-resetting steel rated for .50BMG. They could likely provide you with something that will work.

You might consider contacting a couple of the target manufacturers and seeing what type of steel they recommend for the caliber.

Oh - and welcome to THR!
