Whats Cabelas thinking

I live about 20 minutes from the new Cabelas that is going up in Hamburg PA. It is not due to open until Fall but they already have billboards on the turnpike and all over saying that you ar only 20 minutes away or whatever from Cabelas. Now I can only imagine if I saw a sign like that and didn't know any better I would out of my way to get there only to find there isn't even a completed road to get in. You think that they would plan a little better. Save the billboards until you are open or at least put coming soon on them.

Respectfully, what does this have to do with guns or civil liberties?

The opening of a huge new Cabela's store is pretty much ON topic. Have you ever looked at a Cabela's catalog? They sell tremendous volumes of guns, ammo, huning supplies, outdoor clothing, camping gear.
Just so happens they also sell a lot of fishing gear.
I'd be excited if Cabela's was opening a new outlet just down the road from ME.
Best,
Johnny

Don't get me wrong, it doesn't matter to me either way, I just thought I might have been missing something. Being "wise" was not my intention, although I suppose it is now. :)

Yes.

Me too, until I became bankrupt - which wouldn't take very long.

Sorry, I didn't think that general discussion had to deal directly with guns or civil liberties. So if you are wandering down a highway in PA and see a sign for Cabelas feel free to go WAY out of your way to get there and look at the construction progress.

The next time I am on a Pennsylvania highway and see a sign for Cabelas, I will definately go WAY out of my way to get there and look at the construction progress.
:D
BTW, I'm just having a little fun. I'm not really hot and bothered about your allegedly off-topic post (even though it was originally alleged by me).
Also, welcome to THR. You will get a whole lot of good info here, and also we tend to joke around here a bit with each other...

Yeah, I'd be excited too.. The only problem is that I'll be old 'n grey before that ever happens..:banghead:

I'm fortunate enough to live about 30 miles away from the Sidney, NE store (the original). I love their selection and the entire gun staff knows me by name. They answer all my questions and really take time with me when I want them too.
Once it's opened, you'll forget all about this "signage incident" and get on to the real business at hand - buying guns!

Wow! I'd be excited too if a Cabela's was opening up 20 minutes away from me. The closest one to me is about 150 miles away, which I've had a chance to visit once. I ended up spending an hour looking at the African mounts, another 2 hours shopping and spending money, and another hour talking to the guy behind the gun counter about black powder rifles. They have some very knowledgable and enthusiastic staff.

Lucky stiff... :D
There have been rumors for years that Cabelas is planning to open a store in Corsicana, TX--about 30 min. from me. Nothing's happened yet, but I hope it's true. I'd be there every other weekend...
As for the advertising: although they could be a little clearer about when they're opening, it's not uncommon for a business to start advertising just after ground is broken. Just to keep interest up...
Like I said, lucky stiff... :D

I'm close to it as well, on some of the the billboards I have seen, real small it says "opening in the fall", lot of good that does zipping by at 65. I was pretty much thinking the same as Shane myself.

Have had the opportunity thru work related travel to visit every Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, Scheels, and other chain stores. Cabela's is by far the premier sporting goods super store bar none.
Their gun libraries are pure class, have bought some fine collectible firearms with great service. Home furnishings department is very nice.
Of all the Cabela's I've been to so far, Dundee, Michigan; Owatonna, Minn; and Kansas City, Kansas have about the nicest. If I get within 100 miles of one, it's usually time for a visit.

OK, where is Hamburg? Near Harrisburg? If not, still gotta go!

Hamburg is roughly the mid-point between Allentown and Harrisburg on I-78. Cabellas is being built at the I-78 Route 61 interchange.

Dundee, MI was nice. The gun library had the likes of Rigby/Westley Ricards/Purdey double rifles, etc. etc.

unfortunately I can see Cabelas from the hillside (so you know I'm close). Development IS a necessary evil, but I will miss the relative quietness that the Hamburg area had up until now and loathe the traffic, crowds and destruction of farmlands that will follow for all of Ti;lden's new found glory.
Hell, I was proud of the fact that the nearest dam McDonalds is 10 miles away in Leesport - now there will be one at Cabelas to join the BK, Wendy's and a dozen other Mc-chains that will sprout!!

I'm pretty mystified by Cabela's choice of locations; they're about as remote as you can get. Mitchell, SD; Prairie du Chien, WI; southern MN; somewhere in NE; etc. None in IA, IL, or IN. Maybe the idea is for hunters, fisherman, and campers to stop and shop on their long trip, instead of where they reside.

I'm about an hour away from the Dundee Michigan location.
My boys (ages 9 & 12 - with a little bit of help from Mom) took me there for Father's day.
Looked through hunting and guns and fishing and guns and camping and guns and ammo and guns and animals and guns ...

My father-in-law grew up with the Cabelas brothers. I can tell you that they choose the store locations very carefully and that there's a reason for them being in "remote" locations. They weren't "city folk" and they like their stores to be accesible to people that don't have a hundred places to choose from. It's nice to know that while I may live in the middle of nowhere, I have easy access to one of the best places in the world to shop for sportsman's gear. As far as not being close to where hunters live, that's nuts. Every one of their locations are near small rural areas that are FULL of hunters and fishermen. To say that there is a greater population of these types in a metropolitan area is crazy. My last trip to the city I can't recall seeing one gun rack in the back of a pickup. I didn't see any cars with fishing poles sticking out the windows. Maybe it's just me but it seems like Cabela's is picking great locations for their stores, and I hope they keep it up.

Just wish one would come to the sunny south, I'm pretty sure most of my gun money as well as clothing/shoes money would be spent there, it is one more terrific outdoor store..

Pennsylvania is a logical choice considering all the deer hunters in that state. Here's a link to the Hamburg store...

They probably have access to the demographics and put the store where the largest number of hunting and fishing licenses are sold and within driving distance of fishing/hunting areas.

It's hard enough with a Bass Pro Shops being 30 min away from me.
Now they put a Cabelas with in easy driving distance.

The choice of store locations makes sense, as city folk such as my self might have a bit more luxury and money to take a day on a weekend and make a cross-state trip to a store than a farmer. But prairie Du Chien is pretty much in the middle of nowhere:D

Well it's about daggone time they woke up and smelled the second largest population of hunters in the US.
Now Bass Pro needs to do the same instead of the dinky shop they have near me now that has more fishing poles than all the hunting gear put together. I know it's Bass Pro but come on.
Gander Mountain has exploded in PA and the store is always full.
Yippeeee, sounds like a road trip to me.
