What does the designation of A1 after a gun model signify?

i.e. 1911-a1, M59/66A1, M99A1

The next variant of that design. M1911 -M1911 A1 had scallops at rear of trigger guard longer grip safety spur and shorter hammer spur along with arched mainspring housing, M16, M16 A forward assist, M16A2 3 shot burst and round hand guard you get the idea
