Odd old Lux .222 looks like a 22LR inside and out

I bought this rifle at a gunshow for $125 out of curioustiy.
How does it keep from blowing up?
The only locking action is the bolt handle in a slot of the reciever [just like a cheap 22]

I shot it with 22 tip off rings that didn't quite fit, and the firing pin hole is so big that I am afraid to go passed the wimpy loads I used to another reason besides eating a bolt, getting a primer to pierce.

Oh, and it will fire out of battery too.

This is apparently the same rifle that was sold as the Herter's Plinker ca 1970. Frank DeHaas tested one in .22 Hornet and rated it as unsafe in that caliber, so I can only imagine the bomb it must be in .222 Rem.
