Where to shoot BP in SoCal

I moved from GA to SoCal at the beginning of the month and my Hawkin rifle is beginning me to take her out. What is a good range to shoot at? I am living in the Orange County area within biking distance from the beach. The closer the better.

BTW, BP must not be that big out here because the only BP firearms I have seen at a local shop was an inline. Another shop has a case of revolvers and a few rifles but nothing else. I stopped by Walker 47 the day they were tearing it down to move to their new location and I wasn't all that impressed with what they had either. Where can I find a decent selection of BP firearms?

Walker 47 probably is the place for BP in your area unfortunately. Other gun shops such as Turners will have some BP guns and supplies. I wasn't aware Walker 47 is moving as they moved to that larger location some 4-5 years maybe.

Most if not all the outdoor ranges in your area will allow but none of the indoor ranges will most likely.

Most of the outdoor ranges will be about an hours drive or more though from an OC beach location. Lytle creek and Angeles range and Burro canyon are some ranges reasonably close to you.

I'm in O.C. too. As far as I know there aren't any outdoor ranges open in this county. There is the Orosco Ridge shooting area in the Cleveland National Forest but it is presently closed due to the recent fires. It may reopen in summer or fall.

In San Diego El Cajon Gun Exchange had a lot of black powder rifles.
I shoot at South Bay Rod and Gun in Dulzura. It's far for you but it's a place to try if you are down this way.
Both places have web sites.
Good Luck

1 tip avoid lytle creed and burro canyon on weekends.

during the week its ok. They are mainly unsupervised ranges. Some of the guys will yell out to stop firing all will agree then they will go down range and redo targets. While they are doing this someone comes up and starts to shoot. YEP it happens. Then the benches at burro are warped 1/4" at best plywood with plastic lawn chairs mostly all cracked or broke. Only benefit there is its a good place to pick up brass as nobody picks up there brass it just gets piled up on top of each other.

As for angeles ranges. totally supervised, with steel targets as well as paper. coverd concrete benches one side. All supervised. Very clean establishment. Very highly rated. If you ever want to take a new shooter to a range. You go to angeles as they will respect the sport and be happy with what they did. If you take them to burro or lytle creek they will walk away thinking your crazy and they should close down that range.

I recommend Burro Canyon, well, it is closest to where I live, membership is only $200/yr, and you can also bring a friend.

Nice Burro canyon review. This would not happen at angeles ranges.
