I have a MB 500 I keep for HD...but Id also like to use it for slugs this fall. It has an 18" plain barrel.
Im trying to find a reasonable priced DIY sight system for it. I can find all kinds for vent ribs..but nothing for a plain barrel.
The receiver is drilled and tapped..so I was thinking something from Williams....but I cant find out if they can be installed without gunsmithing. I suppose I could call Williams..but what fun would that be??:):)
Ive also seen some tactical ghost ring sets that would work......but I cant see putting $120 into a set of sights.
Has anyone installed a reasonable set of sights on their 500?
Any info appreciated.

Last time I checked, Numrich had the 18.5" Mossberg barrel with Williams open sights in stock for around $100. Might be less trouble than adding sights to the one you have.

I bought the turkey sight setup similar to this at walmart for $18 and they have worked well for me on both my Mossy 500 and my Remington 870.....

As I stated in my original post...I know there are alot of options for vent ribs....They wont work on a plain barrel though

I would also be interested in a source for sights. I have a Mossberg 500A1.
Smooth barrel as well.

You can buy a rifled barrel with integrated scope rail for about 150. Dont know if you want to go that expensive though.

I had the same question ... no great insights yet...
Found these with inadequate information about whether they replace existing sights or can be dropped onto the already drilled plain Mossy 500

Then these...

Then the ATI integrated shield w sights ... several negative reports about sliding around under recoil.

Hopefully someone has added sights to a plain-Jane, drilled and tapped Mossy before.

I checked out the Mossberg ghost ring sights. It states on the pkg that some gunsmithing is required. I emailed Mossberg to see whats involved...but never got a reply.
I found the same thing as you.....not near enough information

Not looking to replace the barrel....not looking for a scope mount. Just looking for some rifle or ghost ring sights at a reasonable price.

mikkeeh,
You are going to be using rifled slugs? I dont have any experience with those. My mossy came with both barrels (shot and slug) so I just used the slug barrel and sabots. I can attest that they are fairly accurate out to 100y or so, but I dont know about the rifled slugs out there. Best of luck in your search.

I assume your slug barrel is rifled?
I have used rifled slugs and smoothbores for years. They're pretty accurate at reasonable distances.
I really like the feel of the short barrel, and sabots are almost 3x the price of slugs....so I want to keep the barrel I have.
Seems like a few people are having the same problem tho...

Some folks use epoxy and have good luck with it though, and some folks dont have a problem with plastic glock sights falling off...

You can screw a flat blade screw into one of your screw mount holes and align the blade fore and aft of the barrel. It works just like a rear sight and you use the front bead sight as the front sight. It is an Ozark fix that works. You need a screw with the right size of threads.
I use a screw I got from a Weaver scope mount adapter for my 590. As far as that goes you can mount a Wal Mart BSA brand reddot 1X scope on it. I have before and it works good.

I'm telling you... http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=955090&chrSuperSKU=&MC=. Mine really likes the Federal low recoil Truball slugs. Never benched it, but they seem to go right where I call them.
Shotgun sights have to be silver soldered on, because the barrel wall is so thin. That means a gunsmith. Mine would charge at least $100 for just the labor.
Or take yours out and see what you can hit with just the bead. You might be surprised. One of my uncles killed probably 15 or 20 deer over the years with his Remington 11-48 with slugs out of a plain old 28" modified barrel.

Yea..that looks like that might be the best option. I guess I wouldn't have too much trouble selling the 18 1/2 with bead that I already have. Seems someone is always looking for one.
Thx for the input

I assume your slug barrel is rifled?
Yeah, it is. I haven't tried to shoot rifled slugs out of my smooth bore barrel simply because I like to have the scope for anything over 50 yards when hunting, and that is what I got the gun for. I have actually never used my smooth barrel.

I fretted over this one a while. I was going to go with ghost ring sights, but since my shots with my SD ONLY Mossy will be a max of about 10 yards, I just went with a big Truglor front sight in green. With even a LITTLE bit of light I can see it and with a light from the attached surefire it is readily visible. Since I won't be shooting anyone in the dark, I believe the Truglo will be just fine.

I had the same problem; I like the ghost ring/rifle sight isea, but I'm not thrilled with the cost and gunsmith work.
I actually wondered if a new barrel with rifle sights isn't a better idea. I found this a while ago, but I don't know if these barrels are still available.

I ended up buying another barrel from Numrich that has Williams rifle sights installed. It a Mossberg barrel, but MB doesnt list availability on their website of a 18.5" with rifle sights. Havent seen one listed anywhere else either.
Anyway...its pretty nice...and should serve my purpose well.
Thx for all of the input!

Well let's see some pics!
baldguy... I don't remember where, but I saw a vendor that had a vented handguard for the Mossy that comes with ghost ring and front sight attached to it. Not sure how the HG attaches, but for such close range work it should work OK. Sorry I don't remember who it was... if I find it I will post again.
