If he's in Texas its gotta be a 45. Anything else wouldn't be big enough.

Do not use Ruger-only loads if the gun says "New Vaquero" on the cylinder frame.

Well, in my 357 RNV, I like Blazer 158 gr, the clean version if it's available. I haven't had any trouble with anything out of Independence and Winchester either. Like the others have said, handloading is only advised if you just want to save money. There's considerably less steel on this than was on the old vaquero, so stay inside the limits (as with any average gun that's not a Ruger tank).
