I am wanting to buy a pump 12 ga. I don't want to spend a lot on it so I think I have narrowed it down to these 2. Walmart has the Mossberg for $171.00 and a gun store in my area has the NEF for $169.00. Both all black with synthetic stocks. I just wanted it for small game hunting. Anyone have preferrence of one over the other? Or advise?

Thanks.

Don't know a thing about the NEF, but I'm happy with my Mav 88. I keep the 18" barrel on it at the house, and I picked up a 28" for shooting clay.

It doesn't matter they are both good guns for your intended purpose. The Mossberg is lighter weight. Shoulder both and see which feels the best. You will be able to get different length barrels for the Mossberg not so with the Pardner Pump. The Pardner Pump is a simpler design and will be easier to take down and clean. It's a copy of the Remington 870 Express. They both have their good and bad points.

If you were looking for a shotgun for home defense I would say go with the Pardner Pump Protector because I believe it would be better for that purpose than the Maverick.

I'm a Mossberg kinda guy, so I would steer you that way.

That being said, go to the shop and 'test fit' both to see which one YOU like. If you can get a little range time with each, so much the better.

I cannot say for certain, but I have heard that extra barrels fo the NEF "Pardners" are hard to find. Maverick barrels can be ordered directly from Maverick/Mossberg, and are frequently 'on the rack' in gun shops.

I have handled both and decided on the maverick. I'm VERY happy with it. I have ~ 400 rounds through it w/o a hiccup. I would reccomend it without hesitation.

Good choice! My cousin bought one about 2 1/2 years ago, and shoots trap with it. We've probably put 2,000 rounds through it without any kind of failure. I say we because we shoot trap together, but I shoot an 870.

Well I say good choice. I have a mossberg 500 and since they use the same barrels I say good choice yet again!

I'd go Maverick as I don't like the idea of a Chinese clone 870 under the NEF banner for some reason. The idea of a economy Mossberg is a bit strange too though, folks, Mossberg 500's ain't all that expensive, even used.

I think you should have forked over the extra 50 bucks for a Mossberg 500, but thats me. Either way, I'd go with Mav as well since its made by a company known for good guns. Good choice on your part.

I have the Mossberg 500 made for Western Auto as a Revelation. I bought it for my father on his birthday in 1972 and kept it after his death in 2003. It is a great gun! On the other hand I bought a Maverick 88 from Wal-Mart in the mid '80s that would not feed afresh round from the magazine tube unless the gun was pointed straight up. Bought it on a Friday took it back to Wal-Mart on Monday(not open on Sunday at that time) for a refund and was accused by the manager of just getting it for opening day of dove season!
