View Full Version : Short term vehicle handgun safe?

I've been scouting for a small safe just big enough to put my handgun in while I go pick up my kid from school, but haven't had much success. It doesn't have to be Fort Knox, but I need something that's better than a locked glovebox.

The Mini-Vaults are just too big, and the only "low-profile" one I've found was the perfect size, but the walls were too thin to be of any value. If they'd been twice as thick - it would have been satisfactory.

I want something I can bolt down on the floor of my truck in the rear cab.

Anyone have any suggestions? At this point, I'm thinking I may just have to have something custom fabricated.

Crutchfields used to carry a small safe to lock up stereo faceplates that I had bolted under the drivers seat but I looked online and don't see it listed anymore. But I did find this:

perhaps you can alter a regular lockable cashbox that you can get at the larger hardware chains or a security outfit?...hope this helps...

$62 from Wal-Mart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2221464).

Very well made with thick walls.
Key access or programmable electronic keypad.
Includes a mounting plate so you can bolt it to a shelf or to your vehicle interior. You can order extra plates if you want to move it between vehicles or between your home and vehicle.
Has a removable shelf so you can store up to two guns.
Carry handle.
Electronic keypad locks out for five minutes after multiple failed attempts.
Can be programmed with a motion alarm (you'd only want to use that if you're keeping it in the house, obviously).
Interior light comes on when opened.

I love mine.

I own this and keep my HD weapon in there.

I would assume this is as compact as you can get.
