I bought this double barrel gun last night. It's old, probably Belgian. It's missing one screw and one nipple. I don't want to shoot it but I'd like some info on it. For example, how were they loaded? Was there a tool to unscrew the barrels? Any info would be great. (not bad for $45.00)

That is a neat gun. Is that rifling that we see at the muzzle?

I don't think it's rifled (can't get my little flashlight to work and I haven't cleaned the barrels). I think there might have been a tool that was inserted in the end of the barrel to twist it off. It cocks and fires perfectly (well, dry fire). I can see engraved marks in different parts of the barrel and frame but I can't make them out.

thats what i was thinking. kinda looks like an old faucet that took one of those squared wrenches.

It does look like you could use some size square stock to turn the barrels. The profile picture of the gun doesn't show the separation between the barrel and the receiver.

What is that tool used for?
A .454 roundball sits about halfway in the muzzle, so it probably takes a patched ball, maybe a .375 or .380. If I could only find my calipers...

plumbing. older types of sinks and some older types of tubs. you would use this tool after you take the threaded stopper rod out. in the inside there is the Round seat. Take this wrench the round seat has a square cut looks just like your gun. insert it and unscrew the seat. Then you can put a new one in. On sinks and tubs that screw in or out to turn on. you have a faucet washer that presses against the seat. When the seat gets worn out you can use a faucet reamer to obtain a flat smoot surface again. It will work for a while. But sooner or later you take one of those wrenches and unscrew the seat. and replace it.

thats neat. If I could reasonably determine it was safe, I'd have to shoot it.YMMV though. :)
