Mossberg has a 20" vent rib BBL with an "accu-set" choke. I know nothing of chokes, I only have Cyl Bore shotguns but it seems the BBL in question would make a classy defense shotgun on a standard wood stocked 500. Is it safe to shoot foster slugs and buckshot through this choke? What is it comparable to? Modified?

Thanks,
FFMedic

Take the choke out and look on it to see what choke it is. It should be engraved in the metal at the top of the tube.

It could be C, IC, M, F.

I would but I haven't bought one yet, might not even be removable?

Accuchoke is a system of chokes that are screwed into the barrel. Get a choke wrench and unscrew the one thats in there. As Max100 said, the constriction of the choke (cylinder, improved, modified, full, skeet, etc...) should be engraved on the choke itself.

General wisdom that I have seen is that Cylinder or Improved would be fine for slugs, with modified being at the edge of tightness you would want to use.

If you want to you can find a rifled choke made for slugs like this one--

Ok that makes more sense. I was thinking Accu-Set was Mossberg's marketing term for some type of "normal" choke.

Improved sounds good to me, tighter buckshot and good slug shots througha 20" BBL with the option of tighter if I ever get into bird hunting. Thanks!

I'm betting "accu-set" means a set of IC, mod, and full accu-chokes. My 20" vent rib Mossberg barrel came with those three.

And yes, this barrel is sweet.

Accu-set is just Mossberg's propritary naming scheme for their set of choke tubes. You know, like Invector Plus, OptimaChoke, MoblieChoke, etc.

It's to differentiat that choke from the Mossberg guns that take the Pro Factor chokes.

Now as to what the difference between the two is, that I don't know.
