Recoil reducer "cheek injury"

A recoil sensitive friend thought he really had it licked. He had some kind of piston/spring device on his shotgun that stuck out the but and compressed a good 2 inches. Of course, he had to have 2 inches cut off the stock to make everything fit. He showed me how it would compress and save his old shoulder from the recoil. First bird went out and he fired. It recoiled back on the apparatus, saving his shoulder from any pain. However, the stock did peel a nice sized chunk of skin off his cheek resulting in his comment "%#%$&%*$#^#^ thing is a POS".:cuss: No one else wanted to shoot it although there were plenty of helpful hints -- taping teflon on the side of your face, grease to make it slide easier, grow a beard for a cushion, and some I can't repeat. Now he has a gun he can't shoot until he can get a new stock or a spacer put in so he can take off that recoil device. I thought he was lucky he didn't have his right thumb jammed up his nose permanently since he did somehow end up with a nosebleed as well.

you can buy some nice recoil-reducing stocks and pads out there. His obviously wasnt one of them.

Maybe he didn't have the recoil device properly adjusted. These devices do work to some degree...... more for some and less for others.

Or, maybe his shooting form and the stock dimensions just didn't match up at all. He may need to change one or both of those.

Tell him to get a Knoxx Compstock next time.

Sorry to hear your friend was hurt.

He did get a lesson, gadgetry never adequately suntitutes for expertise.

If kick bothers him, light loads and a heavier gun will help, better form will cure....

If it is compressing 2 inches it is not adjusted properly. Mine is set to compress only about 3/8 inches. Two inches is set way to light for his loads. Just because it can does not mean that is what you should set it at. Also you don't tell us about the gun and the original stock which would help. I have seen a few guys that set the tension too light thinking that would reduce recoil better but that is not the correct way.

Gun was a beretta O/U 12 ga. I'll talk to him about adjusting it properly. He also needs rotator cuff surgery and is avoiding it. Maybe he will go ahead once all of his "crutches" fail to make things all right again. He does shoot light loads (7/8 oz). He went back to putting in the 28 gauge inserts into his other 12 ga. O/U and shooting that but it has gotten to the point where even that creampuff recoil bothers him as well.
