S&W 657 .41 3" - A Little Help!

Greeting folks...lurker, but first time post.

Somehow I became the gun nut in the family, so I have acquired (willed) several long/short now from relatives that were barely familiar (we have a big family). Coupled with me being the only one with male children...they keep rolling in.

I got this revolver a few years back and I am sad to say it has sat unfired for three years now. I love the way it shoots, but it is just too big for me to carry and I would rather it be in someone else's collection being shot than locked in a aluminum case in my basement.

I have recently been bitten by the trap/skeet bug, so I am thinking about swapping this out for something that I will use often. But, I need to know what I can expect at sale or more likely, trade.

I know it is a 657, .41 3". That is about it. Inside it reads:

ANN1XXX
A25
Mod. 657
21656

It looks great and shoots beautifully...but I have no experience with the "percent" perfect concept. Hopefully these pics work. It has had very little through it.

Any ideas on value? Thanks all!

Lastly, I know ZERO about trades via FFL etc...for a first timer in a trade, am I best to stick local and avoid any sort of Gunbroker or forum sale?

It's about a 1986 vintage gun - should be part of the "Lew Horton" specials made around then - around 5000 each of a run of 29s, 629s, 657s, I think also 24s and 624s. They came in regular boxes, not presentations or anything, all in 3" and all with very, very distinctive, deeply grooved and highly finished Goncalo Alves "combat" grips. These grips are very attractive and also very functional. They are very, very desirable. These guns in good shape with correct grips run probably on average $700/750 to $850 I'd say. If you do have the original grips, you should put them back on, or it will take $150 or more off those values (the grips alone trade for $150 to $200). I have noticed that it really doesn't matter the caliber or finish (blue or stainless), all of these 3" Lew Horton guns tend to trade in the same price range.

That looks like it has seen moderate use at some point, but part of the beauty of stainless is it wears so well and could be cleaned up to excellent condition if the b/c gap and endshake are tight. Most of these were very well built from the factory of the samples I've seen.

Selling is pretty easy via Gunbroker, et al. Before hand, search for a local FFL that will act as a transfer agent for you. They should probably charge $20 + $15 postage/insurance. This is method #1. Method #2 is to ship to the receiving FFL directly, which you can only do via UPS and Fed Ex, not the USPS. Fed Ex and USPS both demand you use overnight for this (no law requires it, they just demand the extra fee). So that equals about $65. You cannot ship a handgun in state or out of state without using one of these methods. You can sell to any legal (over 18, and not known to you as a felon) resident of your own state face-to-face without an FFL, as long as your state doesn't impose other harsh restrictions (most don't, but NC, IL, NYC, and some other jurisdictions do).

That should help you get started.
