What's the black powder situation?

What's the black powder situation? I was told that since the homeland security laws black powder is now regulated more heavily that it was pre-911. I was told that fingerprinting and backround checking was required to buy it. I have noticed that black powder had disappeared from stores around here. I am not an avid BP shooter but my supply is running low:uhoh:

Can one make black powder or is that illegal with everything else?

I've have not seen any change in the availability or sales of BP.

None of the recent homeland security changes have effected the regulation of sporting black powder or it substitutes.

Normal market issues have somewhat reduced demade as the manufactures are pushing in-lines which use non-BP propellants.

However, watch out for certain new fire codes which prohibit the storage of more than a couple pounds of the stuff. Some of the BP boards have buzzed about this for a while last year.

The best way to buy is buy the case delivered to your door. Go in with friends . . . do a google search on the maine powder house.

I thought that you now had to register to buy Black Powder. That is incorrect?
Up til now its been totally unregulated.
As far as making it, that is still (as far as I know) legal, but it is an activity that has a certain amount of danger involved with it. Recommend you buy it rather that attempt to make it.

Also, if you don't want to, or can't, do a 25LB order from the Maine Powder House, www.grafs.com is a good choice. I buy in 5LB quantities from them and they let you mix and match grades. Price is very reasonable even with the HAZMAT fee (half of what I would pay locally if they still sold BP around here).

This is a very important comment. Many localities make actual possession of blackpowder completely illegal!
Federally, most of the regulations apply to vendors of BP, but on a local level it's often prohibited or posessable quantities are limited in most cities.

Bought 50 Lbs just 2 months ago, split the cost with a friend , 25 lbs each. No problem, just called the dealer up and told him what I wanted and when I'd be able to pick it up. Saved more than a third of retail price too!

Yes, but now you have to store 25 lbs. of black powder somewhere nice and safe and dry and cool. It's taken me over 5 years just to see the bottom of my first can, much less start on 24 more! :)
