I was watching that RedWater movie on TBS tonight and just thought it was funny how when LDPhillips's character has this gangbanger type bad guy pointing a gun at him, and his crew, "banger" style he made the comment.
"he can't get us all, especially holding his piece like he's in some rap video" :D

It's about time its pointed out how dumb that is.

While watching The Sopranos , I enjoyed how Chris yells at one of his crew who insisted on holding his gun 'homey style' during a hijacking. This made me a devotee to this series.

I actually taught some "homeys" to shoot like that when I was living in El Ay. Was at a range, having a good day, three-four guys that looked like bangers shooting next to me. The expressed admiration for the tight grouping I was getting...


I told them "hell that's just target shooting- for combat, you need to ignore the sights, turn the gun sideways, and punch it toward the target. That gives the bullet more energy, and you'll automatically hit, just like throwing a punch. Oh, and yank the trigger as hard as you can, so the hammer hits harder, and the gun doesn't jam."

Somewhere in El Ay, there's a policeman who owes me a beer, and doesn't even know it. "Sarge, it was the weirdest thing- the mope was trying to punch the gun at me...before I piped him with two to the chest..."

And the sights still work just fine sideways. Feels awkward, but I guess 'homey style' usually doesn't include using the sights.

My favorite was The Simpsons episode a few seasons ago where they are trying to bust Fat Tony for illegal fireworks.

you know, I tried this with my Airsoft.

I eventually got (after about 30 tries) to where I could hit my sticky target about half the time.

It must be really hard with something that actually has recoil...

I think I've figured out how the "banger stance" got started:

Think of guys with lots of jewelry. Lots of tacky jewelry, like rings with your name spelled out in diamonds. Now say you want to shoot some of your competition and want to be sure he knows who shot him. Well, its best if you turn your gun sideways so the hand makes a fist. Bingo, your ring is now readable by your victim (assuming said victim can read).

So there you have it, birth of the banger stance (per urban legend)

My understanding of how this came about was actually bangers copying cops, just in the wrong situation.

When holding a riot shield, the gun arm can't be extended directly to the front, the arm must be bent around the shield, and the pistol held sideways to be in the proper line of sight.

Of course, thats just my two cents

Somebody drew up an IPSC stage known as "Hood standards" that involved one string fired in this manner. Actually quite workable if you use the sights or a Cirillo picture. The gamer way to do it is to have the sideways recoil carry you onto your next target.

Ya'll wet. The banger shooting style was developed by a left-handed banger to enable his Jennings to reliablt eject. His right-handed homies copied it.

As to teaching someone to shoot like this, I think not. Someone I know once taught some sideways shooters to shoot correctly. His theory was he'd rather them hit their intended target instead of a kid 3 blocks down. Makes sense to me.
