I have a friend who brought in a 99 C that won't load the last 3 rounds. Do any of you know of any common hicups that cause this. I'm thinking that some thing must be worn and does not actuate the carrier on the last 3 rounds. Any info would be great.

Thanks.

The 99C has a detachable box magazine. Do you mean you can't get the last three rounds in the magazine or that they won't feed?

OK my computer has a mind of it's own so I don't know if you got a half written reply or not. I'll try again.
Thanks for the reply. The rounds wont feed up, you can still work the action but it seems that the carrier is not rotating. I've never worked on this type of rifle before and don't want to fudge up the job. It's in very good shape and my friend still hunts with it...it's been in his family a long time.
I generally work on M16/M4's, 1911's(love the 1911) and shotguns. I'm a field armor for DHS and have a little G2 on repairing firearms. Being in a very rural area I get a lot of old lever action and shotguns, but I've never had the pleasure of working on a 99. I admire these old Iron guns.

OK Jim, sorry for posting the incorrect model of the savage. It's 303 caliber and rotory type feed.

OK, I just wanted to get things straight on the model.

Most of the time, the problem you describe is due to someone having removed the carrier spindle lock screw (left side of the receiver, just above the cartridge counter window) and taken the tension off the carrier spring.

If that is all that is wrong, you can retension the carrier spring by turning the nut with a split screwdriver, then inserting the screw when the hole in the spindle lines up.

Thanks Jim,
That was great info. May the Great Gun Gods look graciously upon you. Do you know of any one that publishes a good manual or book on these old iron guns.

Big Thanks.

Thanks to both of you. Jim, that was the fix for the 99, retensioned and it's running like a champ. Steve, bought the book for future ref and was worth the money. Again. Thanks to both of you.
