I have a 20 gauge 870 wingmaster w/ 28" barrel.

I have been looking for 20 or 22" barrel for it so it can double has a home defense gun. The only barrel that I have been able to find is a rifled barrel.

It is my belief that trying to shot buckshot out of a rifled barrel would be a disaster as far as patterning goes. I assume that the centrifgal force of the rotating wad, caused by the rifling, and shot sleeve would cause the shot to spread very quickly.

Am I correct in my thought process?

Does anybody know of anyplace where I can find a short smoothbore barrel for this?

It wouldn't be a big deal but the 20 gauge is much easier for other members of my family to work.

For a list of Remington shotgun barrels, see here (http://www.remington.com/NR/exeres/000013a4fttihwxgewjsqkfv/Product+Category.asp?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2ffirearms%2fxtrabbl%2ehtm&NRNODEGUID=%7b6F1013A1-D7F7-4E5A-852E-1B0AE874D9EB%7d&NRQUERYTERMINATOR=1&cookie%5Ftest=1). Scroll down to the 870 barrels. Remington lists a 20" 20ga. rifle-sighted barrel, smoothbore with IC choke, product no. 24578, for $153. It has a 3" chamber, but I've used these before on 2¾" receivers, and provided that you only use 2¾" shells, you won't have a problem. (That's assuming, of course, that your receiver is 2¾" - if it's 3", great!). Cabela's lists this barrel for $124.99 - see here (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml;jsessionid=2CSPEDF1FJPQGCWQNVCSFEYK0BWUMIV0?id=0005760212137a&navAction=push&navCount=3&indexId=cat20805&podId=0005760&catalogCode=XD&parentId=cat20805&parentType=index&rid=&cmCat=MainCatcat20712&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.2_A&_DAV=http%3A%2F%2Fa1460.g.akamai.net%2Ff%2F1460%2F1339%2F6h%2Fwww.cabelas.com%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcontent%2FItem%2F21%2F21%2F37%2Fi212137sm01.jpg&hasJS=true) and scroll down to the 20ga. barrels.

Gun Parts Corp. (see here (http://www.e-gunparts.com/)) has ridiculous prices on the new barrels, but sometimes has used barrels at very good prices. For example, see here (http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrProductSKU=803700) and here (http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrProductSKU=803620).

You can get those barrels for $50-75.

Check out gunshows, used barrel racks at store, and www.gunbroker.com.

I had seen these before, but since they said deer rifle w/rifle sights I assumed they were rifled barrels.

Now I notice that they have choke specifications which you won't have with rifled barrels.

Thank you for the effort you put into your responses. Now I need to go give myself my lecture on "assuming" that give to my employees all of the time.

I would put an emoticon here, but I don't see one with pie in its face.

Thank you again.

Buck and rifled barrels do not work well. One correspondent reported 10 yard patterns of 30".

The 20 gauge YE here has the extra RS barrel mentioned with IC choke. #3 buck patterns nicely out of it, and center of pattern is fairly close to 25 yard zero with Rottweil Brennekes, the most effective deer load in 20 gauge, TTBOMK.

And, I'd have no qualms about using that 20 as a HD weapon. I've run a few fast COFs with it and buck and been satisfied with the results.

Which would make it a real street sweeper! ;)
