The surprise being - the stuff was pretty nice. My dealer preemptively started the paperwork - it appears this cost me the 100.00 cash card portion but c'est la vie.
The hard case is of the "luggage" variety - combination latches built in rather than just holes for padlocks. The soft case isn't a Boyt but is servicable. The range bag is pretty nice. I wouldn't find the claim that the merchandise is worth 400.00 of moderately generous MSRP to be outlandish.
I'm sorely tempted to snag one of CDNN's composite field models, subtract the 500.00 rebate total and try to convince the CFO that I bought a nice O/U for 800.00. This is the grossest form of rationalization but is not without a certain appeal.
Of course, if the CFO points out that similar reasoning would allow her to claim that 400.00 shoes are actually 200.00 if they came with a coupon for a 200.00 handbag I'd be forced to concede the point. Maybe I need to rethink this.
Anyhow, the rebate stuff was a pleasant surprise quality-wise.
One caveat for anyone considering a similarly tortured budget analysis: claiming the rebate requires a copy of the 4473. Likely not a problem if one knows about it when the gun is purchased but some dealers of my acquaintance would fuss if asked for a copy a month or so after the fact.
