Some guys carry a spare beater knife so they don't wear out their nice combat knives....any reaons to care a spare 'cheap' beater if I already carry a multitool, specifically a Leatherperson Wave?

Anyone actually carry two knives and a multitool???

Nope esp if your beater is a Strider. :)

Skunk, I carry and use my Leatherman on a daily basis, and it has been real help on several occasions. I remember one time the wiper motor on our truck was burning out, literally a step away from flaming up:what:, and I had to disconnect the wires from the body to stop the flow of electricity. I kinda felt like one of those bomb squad guys you see in the movies as I carefully approached the wiper motor (we're tooling down the highway as this is happening - I'm being jostled left and right:uhoh:).

It was a tense moment as I used the pliers of my leatherman SuperTool to grab the red wire just behind the motor housing and pull the connection free. Not sure if that had stopped the uncontrolled overload, I carefully moved to the next wire, a blue one, and pulled it out of the motor.

I was sweating bullets by this time. I wasn't sure if there was going to be a surge of electricity through my leatherman as I pulled/cut the wires. I couldn't tell if an accident was going to happen because I was blocking my driver's view of the mirrors. All I know is that I had a Class 1 emergency taking place and I had to react with fearlessness and proficiency. That leatherman on my belt was a godsend!

The only downside to the leatherman is that I snapped the sawblade when I was cutting a drag stick for a downed buck. It's pretty worn and needs to go back to the company for an overhaul, but I just can't seem to part with it long enough to let her go. I guess I'll have to buy another one just for spare parts.

My advice, get a leatherman for all those other things they have and use your 'beater' knife for general cutting chores. A Strider is nice if you can shell out the bucks, but a Benchmade is real nice for the money.
