Tennessee - Sept. shoot anyone?
Darrin
August 18, 2003, 10:42 PM
What about it folks? The last two have been too much fun not to do this again next month!
This is not in place of the "non-shoot" we've discussed. I'm hoping someone else will start that thread.
Cheatham County's WMA seemed popular with the exception of the drive. Wanna give it another try or shoot somewhere else?
Weekend dates for September are:
6th & 7th
13th & 14th
20th & 21st
27th & 28th
Let's pick a date and pick a location. Anyone?

If I can anticipate the September shoot for a quick question - is anything planned for August 30th, when I'll be up there? I know there was some discussion about it in another thread, but has anything definite been arranged? Who's co-ordinator of the effort? I'll be arriving late in the evening of the previous Thursday, and will probably be staying with Oleg, with a couple of nights at other friends' places here and there.

Darrin,
The 13\14th or the 20\21st sounds good to me. The first and last weekends of the month may be a bit tough for me.
Preacherman,
I'll attempt to coordinate something for the 30th. I'll start a new thread or find the older one and go from there. Right now I'm spending the week with my folks in Florida (much neeeded vacation from work) so I have some free time.
Anyothers,
If someone would like to help ol' Dave out with some local (as in TN) coordination I'd appreciate it. (Ya'll know anything can happen if you let me fly with this by myself :what: )

I just wanted to plan September now because we have folks from 3 other states that want to join us but need time to plan.

The 7th is our one-year wedding anniversary, so we can't make it (unless you guys want to present Cslinger with that next gun on his list, then I am sure he will make time... :D ).
Any other weekend in September should be fine. Just let us know. Our paychecks fall on the 12th and the 26th, not sure if paycheck dates matter to anyone, but I thought I'd bring this up.
Cheatham county will work fine, better than Owl Hollow, IMHO.

August 19, 2003, 04:39 PM
I vote for Sunday, the 14th. I work from 3:30 til 8:30 Sat. mornings, and occasionally I must sleep.
The consensus as far as I see it is this:
Slinger's: anniversary on the 7th, and I'm not buying Chris a SIG
Bowlcut: out of town on the 7th and 8th
yesterdaysyouth: prefers 14th for same reasons as I
buzz_knox: can't make the 7th
Deputy_Vaughn: can make it the 13th or 14th
gamegod86: prefers 13th or 14th
davidtdm: prefers either 13th/14th or 20/21st
glockten: any weekend is good
So, unless anyone has a problem with me stepping up and making a decision, I say let's do the 14th.
I'll leave the where for someone else to decide. I will however, cast my vote for Cheatham county. The price is right, it has some shade, and no RO's that want to toss people for being miserable marksmen (Darrin). Just messing with ya. :D

youth,
The Cheatham County range isn't one of those places you just find using an address. It's much easier following directions. Let me know where you're coming from, and I'll try to help out. It may be a lot easier for you if you meet someone at an easily identifible landmark, say in Ashland City or Joelton, and then follow them to the range. Once you're there, it's easy to find your way back.

August 19, 2003, 10:30 PM
Dave, there is a slightly faster way to get there depending on where you are coming from. Do you know where Briley Pkwy meets up with Hwy 12? (More to the west side of Nashville) If so, you can follow it to the center of town (Ashland City) in about 20 minutes. From the center of town (those 2 stop lights that are right next to each other) you're only 15 minutes away.
Where will you be when you're done doing what you have to do? Hermitage?
youth of yesterday, the range will be off I24. I'll try to get up the I65 area this week to get you some real directions with Exit #s.

Directions to the Cheatham WMA range.
Disclaimer: Distances are approximate and recommended routes are my opinion. YMMV.
If you are coming from I-40, the easiest way is to come to White Bridge Road exit. It's about exit 101 or so. Go North. This becomes Briley Parkway.
Go to the exit for Ashland City Hwy. (Hwy 12) Turn Left on Hwy 12.
At the end of the 4 lane, (as you enter Ashland City) turn left on "bypass 49." (bear to the left at screwball intersection.) This road comes to a "T" at Hwy 49. Turn left onto Hwy.49. (AKA Cumberland St.) **
Go >>>roughly<<< 3 mi. to Hwy 250. Turn left on Hwy. 250. (landmark= Two Rivers Fire Dept.)
Approx. 3.8 miles on hwy. 250 to Amoco on left.
At Amoco, turn Left (45 degrees) to Griffithtown Rd. There is a Cheatham WMA sign on the left of the road.
Go 1.3 mi. on Griffithtown Rd. Turn Left at Headquarters Rd. (gravel rd.)
Go .8 (8/10ths) mi. on HQ Rd. Range is on the left.
They have installed new target boards. (1 at 25 yd. berm, a couple each at the other 2 berms.) There are also maps of the WMA at the Amoco.
** if you prefer to go into Ashland City, turn left at the light at Hwy 49 West. (landmark= Mid-Tenn Appliance Ctr.)

Hey Darrin, I ment to tell you thanks for showen my son Eddie how to shoot that walther p22 of yours. He thought that was the greatest. When I had to take him back to his mom that was all he could talk about. Now he really wants to be a police men when he's all grown up. Which is something he has said along. I asked him when he was 7 (he is now 10) .Why do you want to be a police men? I figured it was because he wanted to wear the uniform or the badge or even carring the gun around. So you know what he said. "I want to be able to pull people over and write them tickets". :D Well I just wanted to say thanks alot with helping teach my son gun safety. Oh ya. My girlfriend likes that walther also. So I guess I'll have to go a buy one now. Like that really would be a bad thing.:) OOOOO mwithers72. About the no ammo for you thing. Ok, since it's looking as if this is going to be a monthly thing, (THR shoots), how about we add some 'quirks' to the fun.
How about each month has a theme to the shoot? Here are some ideas:
1. .22s (For when the budget is low or new shooters are coming.)
2. Shotguns (Heh, BOOM!)
3. Bolt action rifles (Little contests between us for accuracy.)
4. Semi-auto rifles (How many times can you reload while OEF_VET empties his 75rd drum?)
5. Revolvers
6. Evil Black Rifles
7. Class III (I wish)
8. Carry guns (Draw and shoot drills could be done together, share ideas.)
9. <Insert idea here>
Everyone who brings a firearm that fits in the theme could participate in some shooting contests while we are there. Actual contest can be thought of later or during the planning of that shoot.
Now, we wouldn't be limited to just the weapon that fits the theme. Example: Let's say the theme is "Revolvers." I don't have a revolver, so I'd still bring what toys I want. However, that would be a great time for me to check out other's wheelguns for when I am ready to get one. Plus you wheelgun owners could swap, compare, whatever with the others.
I know some of you have waaaaaaaaaaaaay more guns than I, so this would be a chance for everyone to concentrate on that shoot's theme. You wouldn't have to lug everything, (unless you want to), plus, it'd help with ammo cost. On .22s, heck, that'd be a cheap range trip!
Anyway, anyone interested in this idea? Am I an idiot who thinks too much? Wanna try it this month? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop? Inquiring minds want to know.

You wouldn't be interested in trading that drum for a CVA replica of a Colt 1851 (.44 blackpowder) would ya? I've got all the accessories, caps, a few balls of shot, about 3/4 lb. of powder, and two handmade leather 'possibles' bags to go with it. C'mon, you know you need a b/p revolver to add to your collection, do't you?

Ranges: 25, 50, 100 yard berms. You can bring a stand and set up anywhere in between if you want some odd range or closer for hand guns which is what we do usualy.
Targets: Bring paper and a staple gun/tacks. Or you can throw up some clays on the berms if you like. Want some swinging metal...bring it for 50/100 yarders. Old pc's??? old phones, printers, faxes....you name it, its been out there.
Fee: FREE!!!!
Covering: bout 6-7 tables are covered at the 100 yard section only.
Rests: 6-7 concrete slabs on cinder blocks at 100 yard, 2 at 50, 1 at 25.
Its a very primative range, so no bathrooms or niceities. Its a good idea to bring some chairs if you get tired. If you have one of those uber cool portable tables and unbreallas....might be a good idea s 25 and 50 are out in the sun and if we dont get there early you might not get a table to lay stuff on. Definatly bring a big supply of water cause it will be hot, and sunny. Sunblock might be called for also if you burn easily, think about it out in the sun for 5 or 6 hours probaly. Dont get your hopes up on quality but its a free place to shoot with occasionaly a place to sit stuff down. Oh, and sometimes the target boards get tore all to crap by local yokals that are idiots....so bring clays or like a metal gong type things as never know if you will have a place to staple a target if you dont bring your own target stands
Ill be bringing my m44 mosin nagant, 9mm hipoint carbine, and .40s&w sw99 pistol. Dont know if Ill bring anything else....probaly the 12g single shot shotgun, and maybe the 20g pump...dont know yet

Hey mwithers. I talked to my karate instructor and he's going to be coming out that weekend to shoot with us. He's a riot!
And Kenny, I'll be bringing my .22 rifle if your kid wants to shoot it. I should have about 10 boxes of ammo for it that needs to be wasted too.

Thanks everyone for bring your 22's so my son could shoot. I've bought a couple of family packs of .22's. So I think he'll have fun.
My girl friend's sister is bring her husband(Mike). Which he has a shotgun he has been itchin to shoot. I've been try to get an old friend that I use to work with to come, but he hasn't replied to my emails yet.
I'am going to be looking around area pawn shops, classifieds, wally worlds, and gun shops. For a bolt .22 for my son.I'am think of trying to find a youth size 22 for him or should I try to find a reg 22 that he is comfortable with holding? I'd like to get a ruger 10/22 semi :D for myself of course:D or maybe a good used walther p22:D :D for the girlfriend to shoot of course:scrutiny: :D .
Hey mwithers what time do you want me to come out there that sunday morn?

kenehsr,
I was in Sporting Arms, near Wal-Mart on Charlotte Pike (exit 201, I-40), yesterday, and they had quite a few bolt-action .22's that would probably be perfect for your son. They also had several autos.

I think people who have firearms to sell should also list them here with a price range in case you want to get rid of that old pistol/rifle sitting in the back of your closet. I might be interested in a pick up or two if the price and weapon is right.
I'm personally looking for an old shotgun (12ga or 20ga preferrably) if someone has one they want to get rid of while they are there.

Just a reminder about the shoot this coming weekend.
When: 1pm / 1300, Sunday, September 14th, 2003
Where: Cheatham County Range
Cost: Free
Ranges / Targets: 25, 50, and 100 yds.
Also, I've printed several extra copies of the Sept. Virtual Match in case anyone wants to shoot it.
Frank
P.S. If anyone has a .22, bring it so kenehsr's son can shoot it and get an idea of what's right for him.

I still plan to be there. It'll be tricky though. I'm off work but there are a lot of other factors to deal with. For the time being they are squared away. Won't have much ammo though. Maybe a hundred or so rounds per gun.

i'm ready to leave now, but then i'd be waiting for a while, and they probally wouldn't like that at work....:D
got the sagia in today, and put some rounds through it... i've got to do some work on that thing, horrible trigger and balance, but it was cheap and it shoots good....
zeroed the scopes on the 10/22 and frank n' mosin today, had to swap em cause the cheaper scope couldn't handle the recoil of the 762x54....
finished the trigger job on the neos, can't wait to shoot that...
whoever wants to shoot my stuff can, until you're blue in the face, if you bring your own ammo... but i'll be nice and let you pop off a few rounds if you don't have that caliber...
all the .22's will make an appearence...
glockten, any chance i can get a hold on that m1a??? do i need to go pick up some .308??? :D
and most importantly.... who's gonna meet me when and where?? i still haven't plotted the course, or even picked up a map yet...

I don't think the wife and I will make it this time. We have family in town and really don't have much "shootable" rifle ammo.
Hope everybody has the typical good, safe time. Make sure you get lots of pictures.

Mwithers I'll be at your place between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. I picked up a ruger 10/22 semi-automatic. I figured that I would get him use to handling a regular rifle than a small youth rifle. Also it gives me something else to shoot.:D

Scattered thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday.
I'm still going. If it rains it'll be an excellent opportunity to expend a couple of Dragon's Breath rounds and some .22LR and 7.62x51 tracers.:)

If it rains, I'll still be there, just maybe not as long. I have to try my new SKS and also see how my 1911 works now that the extractor and firing pin spring have been replaced. Of course, I'll also bring the AK for some rapid fire fun. HeHe.
