I've been trying to figure a better way to display mine.

It can't be anywhere near the ground, as we have little bastard thugs in the neigborhood who delight in stealing flags.

I had it hanging under my one window for awhile, but the cord I used broke in a strong wind, and it was getting pretty battered on the bricks.

I don't know how I should display it...

I'm thinking horizontal pole, perhaps under the one bedroom window where it will be easier to get to.

What Mike said. Actually, I'm budgeting for a large flag pole (you wouldn't believe the cost of those suckers!). I'm hoping to get the one from an old city hall in my area. They built a new city hall with a new flag pole. I've offered to cover all the costs of removing the old one. It's bigger than what I could afford to by right now. Cross your fingers for me (my wife thinks I'm nuts).

I will not touch an American flag in ANY form unless I can care for it properly. No exceptions. This is why I get so angry at sticky flags or newsprint flags. They are all much more disgusting than a thousand burning flags at some leftist demonstration. The flag must NEVER be allowed to fade in the sun, esp. stuck to the back of some SUV windshield.

Anyway, once the Compound is set up I'll have a flagpole for the US, Alaska and Israeli flags and treat them properly.

24/7/365 (with a solar powered floodlight on it at night) on a 20' pole in my front lawn.

Sam's Club had a heck of deal a while back - the whole pole kit and embroidered flag for $69.00; Costco had a similar setup but at $99 witha big plastic eagle for the top (mine has a ball.)

Before that, a short pole off the front of the house.

Mike: if you have a deck or balcony, the Sam's Club kit had a fixture to mount it on such; I put mine in the ground in a PVC tube with QuikCrete.

Kids gave me a yardarm a couple of birthdays ago, and I fly Old Glory, the Virginia state flag, and **ahem** the U.S. Marine Corps flag every day. Leatherness is afraid I'll make good on my threat to post colors every morning using a loud--very loud-- PA system. Wake up a few retirees, you know. :D

I was wondering of all you that are patriotic and love your country.... have you checked to see if that flag you are flying is made in the US?

Seems to go without saying, but, After September 11th 01, the demand for our country's flag was so great we had to outsource to keep up with demand. Guess where that job went! Yup, China.....

Since then the demand has begun to fall off but unethical or even unpatriotic people (whichever you would choose) have purchased their flags in the US made by the chinese. hmmmmmm

It used to bother me to see improper displays of the flag (having been taught correct display and handling by my WWII vet dad). It doesn't anymore -- I guess I've softened into a member of greyhound's "well their hearts are in the right place" crowd. I still follow proper display rules though.

Then again, I used to get perturbed at people who hang rosaries from their rearview mirrors. They aren't "safety talismans."

For those who get angry, I'd suggest this constructive approach. Send a polite letter -- that begins with praising their patriotism -- but corrects their poor display. Since then the demand has begun to fall off but unethical or even unpatriotic people (whichever you would choose) have purchased their flags in the US made by the chinese. hmmmmmm Unethical or unpatriotic? Nahh. They're probably just ignorant with their hearts in the right place. :) I'm not usually one of those who insists that everything I buy be made in America (like that's possible). But yeah, it does seem wrong to buy a flag made elsewhere. But, again, I have a hard time holding a grudge against people who want nothing more than to show patriotism.

Well, since I don't have the time or discipline to put it up and take it down everyday, the answer is hardly ever. I have a place for it and will fly it on certain holidays but that's about it.

Post 9/11, the flag at the AZLibertarian mansion flies 24/7--illuminated at night, of course. Flag decal on the back of my truck. The tie tack I wear while at work depicts a flag next to the World Trade Center. I'm never very far from a flag.

My "driveway" flag is, in fact, beginning to look a bit long in the tooth--fading slightly and the beginnings of tatters. I've got to begin to look for an American-made replacement soon. It will be retired with all dignity.

BTW, one of my most valued possessions is the flag I purchased after the AZLib. family vacation to Washington, D.C. Mine was flown over the House of Representatives (the Upper House, IMO), on July 4, 2000. For those who don't know, the House and Senate each have an office that raises and lowers flags for constituents all day long. They raise the flag, lower it, box it up, and ship it to you with a nice certificate of the event. Your Representative or Senator can help you arrange for a purchase. IMO, they make nice gifts for special events in life like military enlistments/retirements, anniversaries, Eagle scout ceremonies, etc.

I fly my flag every day, but it's not a very pretty one. It's got a couple of black marks on it, one tear, and the whole thing is pretty sooty and dingy.

Why do I fly it this way?

Because it is the flag that was flying at my house when the house burned down.

I had other things on my mind (go figure) the night my wife and I came home and found our house in flames with fire trucks parked on the lawn, so I didn't notice what had happened to the flag until later in the week. We were inspecting the damage and found the flag, properly folded, sitting on a shelf in the corner of the garage. At some point during the night, a firefighter had taken the flag down, cared for it, and placed it where it wouldn't sustain any more damage.

Even though it's torn and has been damaged by smoke and fire, that flag still flies at my house. I managed to hold things together during and after the fire, but I cried like a baby as I hoisted that flag.

I have a new one, still in the package, that will be raised after the house is rebuilt. New house, new flag, new beginning. Until then, even through the fires red glare, our flag is still there.

I am Canadian, so I do hope y'all don't mind that I voted. I do fly the flag daily, 24/7. It hangs from one of those diagonal flagpoles that you attach to the side of your house. It doesn't get lowered at night, nor is it illuminated, simply because I haven't the means to do such. I'm actually glad that someone addressed this issue of flag ettiquette earlier in the thread, 'cause it reminded me of an earlier conversation I had. I was teaching a class on, among other things, flag etiquette, and I was asked if I believed that civilians, or cadets on civilian time, should follow proper etiquette when flying the flag. I answered, "As best as one could". I in with the "at least their heart's in the right place" school of thought.

Oh, and yes, my flag is made in Canada.

By the way, if any of you are interested in a quality US flag, get one from Gideon Flags (www.gideonflags.com). I bought my two-star National Service Flag from him.

His flags are a little bit more expensive, but that's because each flag is sewn by hand in the United States.

I dont fly it yet, but I would like to. Ideally, it would be above the AR flag, and I am not sure what would be under the AR flag.

How many flags is the recomended max for a pole? 3?

In checking out the MSN forum THE GUN ROOM, I did not find much worth plowing through the format for, but I did find this in the EMOTICON 3 page. It tickled a memory of someone at The High Road seeking workable images of the Gadsen flag, so I did a short search of The High Road. I did not uncover the post I thought I had remembered, but I did notice your heavy presence in the threads on the Gadsen flag that I did find and thought you might enjoy.

Email addresses are hidden, and private messaging does not support attachments or my attempts to insert an outside emoticon/smilie (pilot error?) so I resurrect an old thread.

Never.

It's not due to a lack of patriotism; but due to a lack of being able to do it properly.

Don't have a pole.

To lazy to put it up and take it down daily if I did have one.

So until I have a permanently affixed pole with wiring to light it, I won't do it.

Used to - many years ago.

Had a 20' flagpole too to fly it from.

Wow, a lotta people flying flags 24/7, lit and everything. :)

I'm not nearly organized enough to do that at this point in my life. It's all I can do to remember which kid got fed when, let alone putting up and taking down a flag every day.

So, is it proper to have one displayed on your house from time to time, or does it always have to "fly"?

GigaBuist
December 16, 2003, 05:17 PM
Sorta. It's an improper setup, but it's the best I can manage. 4' x 6' flag in my apartment "tacked" to the wall. Because I'm sure as heck not going to drive a nail through the flag to tack it in place there's just two nails that I hang it on... so the stars are in the upper right corner. You walk in and you can't miss it.

Maybe I shouldn't do it that way, but I gotta have one somewhere. Dad's got a 100 foot pole up lighted at night, been that way for probably 12 years. Not even sure if he knows it's supposed to be lit up -- just does it so you can see it I think.

After driving a motorcycle around Europe in 1970, I realized how much I love the U.S.A.! 31 years later(9/11)I felt an incredible urge to buy as many American flags as I could. As a lot of us found out, they were sold out for a while. I was thrilled to find one, with a pole and mounting bracket. I rushed home, attached the bracket to the side of my house and raised the flag. I bought a magnetic American flag that's still centered on the tailgate of my Ford F-150. Maybe it's not perfect flag ettiquite, but no one has to guess where my heart is.

Gigabuist, the union is to the left when it is hung vertically on a wall. Its one of the most common flag errors. Around July 4th I knocked on a couple of doors around my block to have people fix their flag while hanging this way.

No, mainly because I am not home enough. I do however hoist and haul down the ensign at appropriate times. No, that's not the hapless junior officer getting a wedgie, that's ensign as in the national flag flown on a warship.

I was seriously web searching for a quality made "Betsy Ross" pattern flag about a month before 9/11. When it happened I correctly predicted the flood of flag wavers before the flags hit Wal-Mart shelves. Now I'm those folks had their hearts in the right place, but I figured I'd give the rampant nationalism a chance to chill out. Right now I am looking for a quality quilted U.S. flag for interior display and a 13 star to fly outside.
