I just found this treasure trove of ballistic information regarding the round ball and conical projectile. A must read for any serious competition shooter.
Prepare a nice cup of coffee or tea, sit back and relax.

Good link!
The relatively high velocity of the round ball develops relatively high energy, which when combined with its relatively large diameter, makes horrific wounds at short range. However, you can readily see that velocity and energy rapidly fall off. The common round ball will lose more than half its initial velocity in the first 100 yards and nearly a third again in the second hundred.
I had a thread last month over this apparent paradox. I believe this is why the PRB has a reputation both as an excellent and a poor hunting round. At 100 yards it's a very different projectile than at 25.

The exact reason that I plan to keep my shots under 75 yards & because of the dense woods here in Louisa co. makes many shots over 50 yards hard pressed.
.495 Cast w/ .010 lubed patch.
90gr. 777 fffg.
estimated MV/ME out of my 26" barrel:
1830fps 1345ft. Lbs.
estimated 100 yard ballistics:
1030fps 426ft. Lbs.
Ofcorse this is all estimated by 2 different charts "Hodgdon 777 & Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual" & I leaned twords a weaker result but good enough to let me know what it's limitations are till I get the time to grab the chrono.
