I need a new CCW gun. Its going to be a 9mm, semi-auto. The list I've come up with is all within my price range, around $650, so please try to keep other suggestions around there. Also, I like 9mm, but will entertain .45's depending on price. I don't like .40SW.
Please post your reasons for your vote, as well as reasons against any of the guns.

Rami Poly not on your list. I have one and find it the best ccw I have had so far. Had a Kahr PM9 nothing but trouble. Still carry a P32. The CZ you have listed is a good choice also. Love the CZ line of pistols.

I like the P99. I have a .40 as opposed to a 9mm, but had a 9mm before the .40 and I like them both.

Buy a Kel-Tec P11. Lifetime warranty, American made, holds 11 (10+1) and is among the smallest 9mm's on the market. Very reliable and you can pick one up NIB for around $225-$250 and spend your other $400 on ammo. I have a P11 for warm weather carry and a S&W M&P40 for cooler days where jackets are needed. My P11 has been flawless. Check out ktog.org for all your answers.

I bought an XD9 SC. It's small enough to conceal easily, hits where you aim it, and is under $600. I like that it comes with a dual mag holder as well as a speedloader and extra 16 round magazine.

The Walther P99 is a solid, reliable, dependable, time-tested firearm from a manufacturer with a storied and well-deserved reputation. It's certainly worth a close look.

Any reason why you're not looking at a Hi Power?

My personal favorite CCW is my Glock 30. In your case, I would recommend the Glock 26 as it is extremely ease to conceal and very comfortable to shoot!

Taurus 24/7 compact - great price-point; mine has been reliable and accurate and easy to shoot. The last few sessions with my shooting coach it's the one I end up using. Another option: the S&W M&P compact - another great gun at a good price.

Any Highpower or decent variation will suit your needs and possibly come at a lower price than your ceiling. The good thing is that parts are abundant on a global scale.

If you can deal with the triggers, Glock 26 or possibly 19. I shoot a CZ P-01 a little better than any Glock I've tried (19/17/23) so CZ is what I ended up with.

I think for $650 you might be able to get a HK P7 PSP . . .

Thanks for all the advice!
I've shot all the Glocks you've talked about. I don't like Glock. For me, personally, they're not comfortable to shoot(19, 26, 30). I've had the same problem with the S&W MP's. I hate the triggers and they're not comfy. I have a Taurus MilPro right now, PT111 in 9mm and thats the reason I'm looking to upgrade. The one Taurus I've shot has convinced me to never buy another Taurus. I don't like the XD line because of the plethora of safeties, mainly the Glock style trigger safety. Personal thing, yeah, but I don't like it. I've also carried a Hi-power, and shot it extensively. It was a friend's CCW piece. It was a bit big for me for a carry piece on my 5'10" frame. My buddy is 6'4" and it fit him well. I would love to have one, but it would be a range/HD weapon only, not a carry gun.
For legalities, I'm in TX, so not really a worry.
I'll admit, that my choices are based on a few personal and completely subjective criteria. One is that I can't afford a range gun apart from a carry gun. I only own 2 pistols right now, and one is a Beretta 1934 which is a collector quality war trophy and is a safe queen. I'm a rifle guy so my handguns are limited. I like kel-tec, so I should have listed the P-11. A friend has one and I enjoyed shooting it.
Another personal thing is I want a rail. The RAMI doesn't have one while the P01 does. They're both CZ so I consider them similar. The P99 has one, as well as both the Sigs.

grimjaw
May 17, 2008, 03:11 AM
Well . . .

The P-01 trigger isn't as good as the CZ75Bs, and the CZ75Bs generally aren't as good as the Hi-Powers. We aren't talking huge orders of magnitude here, but I do notice a difference. The P-01 is a tradeoff. It's very close to the size of the compact Glocks (19/23/32) and fits some of the same holsters, it's a little big for me to try to bother concealing on really hot days, something you may want to consider down in Texas (I'm 5'8"). It is my bedside gun and it's soon to be wearing a flashlight and night sights for that purpose. The only thing I'm buying for it is ammo. AFAIK the P-01 only comes in a decocker model, which may or may not matter to you (I kind of wish I could cock and lock it). I just keep mine on half cock and practice shooting DA as often as possible. The DA pull isn't bad. Some people don't like the trigger shape on the P-01, but I find it easier to reach with my short fingers.

I should probably be on their payroll, but here goes again. This little gem, a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra-Compact, is ambidextrous, accurate, reliable, relatively small, relatively light (aluminum alloy frame), 13 round magazines, manual safety and all for about $350 out the door. It's worth a consideration, it's been my go-to gun since I bought it, and my other guns are Glocks.

If you are only going to have 1 gun to shoot then the SIG 250 looks promising.

You can switch it out to subcompact or full size and switch it out to accomodate different calibers too.

All at an extra expense of course.

Other: The FNP Compact. 15+1 9mm, complete with 3 magazines for $389 NIB (or $339 for DAO model) from CDNN

Why? Because that's what I'm wanting to buy for myself and the FNP seems to have a near-sterling reputation. :D

Funny you should ask. I just purchased a CZ P-01. It fits like a glove and is very accurate for a compact. I have medium large hands and this thing feels as good dare I say better than my 1911. I like the decocker. I've read about the extensive 3 year testing done on the CZ P-01 and I don't think there is anything that can touch it. The only thing I'd like to have done is a trigger job. I'm so use to the Single Action 1911 trigger that I've been spoiled.

I love my P-01. My trigger is as smooth as you can expect from a SA/DA Decocker. Smoothed out considerably after 500 rounds, and now after about 3000 rounds it's as good as anything else I have with the exception of my 1911 or maybe my 1873 Cattleman.

Never had a single issue (besides wishing I had a duotone version maybe :D). I've read about some folks having stovepipes, but I think that may be an ammo issue? Not sure. So far it's eaten anything I've thrown at it, reloads and off the shelf.

I am CZ biased, so take it with a grain of salt and just one more, "I love their products" story.

The OP's first post said the gun for primarily for CCW use, and subsequent post clarified that he didn't like Glocks or S&W M&Ps and he wanted an accessory rail. Taking those critera into account, here are a few options, all new pistols, at reasonable prices in the current CDNN catalog (some already mentioned):

Springfield Armory XD-9 Sub - $434.99 (two mags, holster, mag carrier)
Kel-Tec - PF-9 -$229.99 (no extras)
FNP Compact - $339.99 DAO or $389.99 decocker (no extras)

I'm not a big Kel-Tec fan, but any of these should do the job. Personally I would go with the XD-9 because they are so popular (parts, accessories, etc.) and seem to have a great reputation. If you drop the accessory rail from the wish list there are also a lot more options.

Let us know what you decide, ColinthePilot.

The Walther has a nice following especially in 9MM, mine is .40 S&W and I love it.

I also own the Pro2022. I think it is a great weapon, but I'm just getting used to mine.

I'd also throw in the M&P for good measure.

The Sig, Walther, and M&P are all more accurate and just as strong as the Glocks.

I own glocks 17 and 26 in the 9mm, but have to admit the FN compact is a sweet gun and would be my 2nd choice. + in their full size (not sure about compact) you can choose if you want an external saftey or de-cock lever. I buy glocks because parts are cheap and plentiful and if something fails (rarely, if at all) easy fix also most parts are interchangeable. Good luck on choosing, I know it is hard with all the choices. You cant go wrong with the sigs and cz either. Just do like me, buy one of each when you can afford it!!

Don't know why you don't like the .40S&W, but, OK, it's your gun.

I personally carry a S&W Sigma .40, and I' like it just fine, and that's from a guy who "wouldn't consider" anything other than either a 1911, or a revolver. I don't even mind the trigger pull of this pistol.

That being said, if I chose from your list of manufacturers I would probably choose Sig. I would also look at the Sig in a .45. My brother is quite pleased with his.

May 19, 2008, 01:17 PM
Well, since Glocks are out of the question, I'll suggest: Sig P229 in .357 SIG caliber.

Why .357 SIG? It's a more reliable feeding round than the other flat cartridge calibers. The .357 SIG is a bottleneck design! Plus, it has a bit more power behind it than the 9mm, and very similar or superior ballistics results (especially through barriers) than the .40, 9mm or .45 compared. :)

I like mine very much. It comes in three flavors to suite your tastes. I like the AS flavor (SA/DA) but you can get the QA model, what I call the semi-DA or you can get a true DAO.

Colin, it would be helpful to you if you determine your requirements in a carry gun.

For example, how much weight are you willing to pack every day? How do you intend to carry? What is your minimal magazine capacity requirement? Does size matter? Do you want a DA, DAO, SA? Will this also be your primary range gun as well as CCW?

Decide what you need, then the choices will be much easier. My suggestion would be a Kahr CW9 at under $400.

I've carried a Taurus PT-111 MilPro for the last year and everything about it is comfy. I carry IWB and I like the Taurus because I can carry in shorts and a t-shirt. Its compact and light enough for the Texas heat.
I like 10+1 as the minimum mag capacity, but the Sig P6 might be an exception.
At this point, I want DA/SA or DAO. Something about carrying cocked and locked kinda bothers me. I like the Sigs and the CZ P06 because they are DA/SA with decockers.
This will likely be my primary range pistol. I'm a rifle guy, and only have pistols because my rifles are too tough to conceal. I shoot rifles for fun, and pistols for protection and proficiency.

ColinthePilot, since you have a CCW gun and seem happy with it, and this would be a range gun, then it sounds like you don't need a compact frame at all.

CDNN has NEW Ruger P95DC w/2 mags for $249 and the two-tone KP95DC for $289 and a lot of other NEW choices under $400 -- FNP (reg or compact), S&W Sigma, SW99, Steyr M-A1

If you can do without the rail, since S&W has discontinued the older metal-frame autos, CDNN has NEW S&W 6906 and 5906 stainless 9mm (12- and 15-shot) and S&W 410 blued 40 S&W (11-shot) for $399.

Used there are tons of options under $400 (and some under $300) including Beretta 92 and 96, Glock 22 and 23, Sig P6, and all kinds of S&W metal-frame 9mm and 40 S&W.

As a matter of fact, the trade-in stainless 5906 9mm for $319, or 4006 40S&W for $329, both with protected adjustable sights, would both be great options, and I am sorely tempted to get one myself.

I happen to like Glocks, because they are really simple and have good reliability. Also, they are common law enforcement issue, indicating high reliability.

Sure they are ugly, but that does not detract from the glock pistols ability to go 'bang' every time the trigger is pulled.

I went to the gun show today and found a Sig P6 for around $300. I went to the range immediately afterwards, and realized Sig deserves every bit of praise they've ever gotten. That pistol was a complete joy to shoot. Its smooth, accurate, comfortable, and for a P6, has a beautiful finish. The DA trigger is about a million pounds, but the SA pull is perfect. I shot about 200 rounds this after noon. Thanks for everyone's advice.
