What is the cost on one? About $600. Hell, even if it were $1200, I would willingly pay that to NOT be chewed on by a bear.

I have one in 45. I think you'll be pleased with it, though I wasn't aware that bears were a problem in Galveston. :D
Perhaps I should cook up some stout loads before my next trip down there?

Ya never know - Grizzlies are making a comeback all over the US. Heck, it would kinda suck if you got mugged by one while taking out the trash, even in the deep south.
One of the guys at my range got a S&W .500, saying he thought he once saw a dinosaur trying to break into his truck. Not sure what excuse he gave his wife to explain the purchase.....:D

The Redhawk is a dated design, lockwise. The SRH is far better. If you want a true .44 Magnum, get the best - a current production 4" 629, SKU #163603, won't cost that much more, but will discharge true SAAMI-spec'd .44 Magnums with greater finesse. Get the Hogue made-for-S&W .500 Magnum grips, too - the best $35 you'll ever spend for a real 629's recoil management.
If you want/need real bear protection, get a SRH Alaskan in .454 - or a 4" S&W .500 Magnum. Better yet, carry a 12 gauge slug gun. Of course, the last brown bear I shot got f5.6-f8 @ 1/125... at the zoo.

No need for such a revolver and no interest in .429 magnum. :p That said, I like the design and hold but would opt for the .45 Colt one myself. Tehn again, I'm not worried about snarling blood thirsty creatues up this way either.

Just to give some background - I had a .454 SRH for years - fine revolver, even liked the OEM springs & grip! I later bought a new 5.5" RH in .45 Colt - horrid QC from day 1 - spent nearly a month back home - never really happy with it. Trading another Ruger (5.5" SS Bisley .45) for a second 625MG in .45 Colt iced it's demise. Love those .45 Colt MGs!

The 4" Redhawk is a great gun, I'm happier with mine than I've been with any gun in a long time. There's no load you can't shoot and it's more accurate than I am. Great package.
