well gentlemen I hate to ask this question. Went to work today without looking at my manual as planned. I need to pick up some powder to load some .277cal nosler ballistic tips 130grains. I can't remember which powder they listed as most accurate, consistant and uniformed and there is no one at home that can help me. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks

It would help to know what caliber you are asking about?

.270 Winchester or .270 Weatherby?

H4831 or R22 are never bad choices for the 270 and any bullet wgt, at least not in my rifle.
I don`t have my manual handy at the moment either but, I believe the books accuracy load is with one of the 4831s. Keep in mind what works best in one rifle doesn`t always appear to best in another. Some (not all) of the various manuals "accuracy" loads are simply the load that gave the least velocity spread in the lab and has nothing to do with any groups they fired. They take it that consistant velocity equals accuracy.
Your rifle may like another powder.

sorry about that 270win. I realize that it is a starting point. usually imr 4350 works best with sierra boattails, but you never know whats best until you try. got tired of deforming the tips in the magazine after several load/unload hunting trips. I don't want to burn alot of bullets to find a load with the ballistic tips. I can usually find an fairly accurate hunting load with a consistant recommended powder. thanks in advance.

If you're inquiring about the Lyman manual, it lists IMR4831 as potentially accurate with the Sierra soft point. My personal experience, IMR4350 with the 130g Nosler Ballistic Tip. Your experience may vary.

Use this info at your own risk and discretion...

The Nosler website says: 46gr IMR4895 as being the most accurate load tested for the 130gr BT...
in two of my manuals, they list that as max load for that combination...

HTH...

in those two manuals you refer to during the narrative to the cartridge, before the loading data, does it list the most uniform powder??

Interesting, The #5 and #6 Nosler manuals list 55 gr of H4831sc as most accurate with 130 gr bullets and the #4 claims 52.5 gr of H4831.
Seems everytime they recheck their data the results differ......:scrutiny::evil:

Nosler's site, though extremely limited, gives IMR4895(46.0), H380(50.0) and Viht N160(51.0). The loads in the brackets are the most accurate they tested, not the most accurate load.
"...the most accurate load tested for the 130gr BT..." It is for IMR4895. It is the Max load.
"...need to pick up some powder..." Gun shops have manuals for sale. Look in one.

thats for all the responses, but not the attitude. I realize most shops have manual, except the local one, tuff toke. he only carries powder and primers, because he can't compete with the larger chains.

Don`t take this a critisim but, I`d ask the shop owner if he`d order a manual for you or go to Graf or one of the other inter net sites if not. Actually with the price of gas Graf will ship to your door for $4.75, that is cheaper then I can drive to the nearest shop around here.
Manuals are IMO a must for any reloader. One is fine but, it is always prudent to cross check data or nice to find data for a powder not offered in one or another.

Graf now has the Speer #13 which has just been replaced by the #14 on sale. You can have it delivered to your door for ~$15

I not understanding what people are not getting I had several manuals. Which when I was at work yesterday are about 45mins away at home. The gun shop is closed on sunday and monday and I forgot to write down the type of powder I wanted to buy. I thought since you all are probably using you computers at home that you could just look for me, which I would appreicate. When I got home, Ichecked and found that I wanted H4831. I ahve some IMR 4831, just wanted to try something new. Sorry if I wrote something confusing. Thanks for all the help.

We used RL22 with 130gr Ballistic tips.

270 Win is pretty close to 7mm Mag in powder needs.

RL19, RL22
IMR 4350, IMR 7828
H4350, H4831, H1000

Nosler's data on these 2 cartridges are stout.

My 7mm mag loads from Nosler data are shoulder busters, but very accurate.

3100fps is about where factory rounds are for 130gr 270 Win. loads. Hornady has a faster magnum loading for it, I think is around 3200fps.
