In praise of the Police Positive

The other day I went to an older gentleman's house who had a fine collection of guns. I was particularly charmed by a little 4 inch Colt Police Positive.
It was an absolutely delightful little gun. It felt like it was shrink-wrapped around the .38spl. It had everything that it would need in order to shoot it, but not an ounce of unnecessary metal. It was just...perfect. The lock up and trigger were so tight and smooth I was amazed as well.
I REALLY like that gun. I had never ever given it any thought before because in my mind Colt=collector value. Which in turn = I can't shoot it, or afford to own it.
But that is one FINE little gun. I am so impressed by it, I may have to go ahead and add one to my "must buy" list.

The Colt Police Positive is a great little gun. It is built on the same "D frame" as the Detective Special. For comparison, the Colt D frame fits in between the Smith J and K frames.
Of all the guns I own, my wife's favorite is the PP because of it's small, easy to handle frame, and smooth trigger.
Just to wet your appetite, here are two of my PPs, the one in front is a 4th issue made in 1977, the one in back is a PP MK-V made in the early 1990s.

My wife has a 4" 32-20. Made in 1918. I shoot it better then she does. :D
I'm so tempted to open up and widen the rear sight notch so we both could shoot it better.

I agree with your feelings about the Colt, but if you are looking to purchase one be sure you look for a Police Positive Special, not the Police Positive. The Police Positive has a shorter frame and cylinder, and was chanbered in .22 Rimfire, .32 S&W Long and .38 S&W. The Police Positive Special is longer in frame and cylinder length, and was chambered in .22 Rimfire, .32-20 and .38 Special. Standard barrel lengths were 4, 5 and 6 inches. When the barrel was shortened to 2 inches it became the Detective Special.
Many fans of the Detective Special overlook the Police Positive Special with its longer barrel. But it is easy to carry and concel in an inside waistband holster, and a far more effective weapon then a snubby.

I'm by no means a Colt guy and not really a double action guy either but I alwasy liked the look of the PP MK-V. I saw it in an ld catalog years ago. Only appeard in the catalog for one years as I was told it was more or less a model made from leftover parts. (never got that confirmed) I'd never seen one until last year. saw just the end of the bbl in the shop's case and had to see it. Looked it all over but put it back as I was buying two other guns that day. I called the next day to put it on hold but it was not available. Just my luck i thought. A few weeks later I was back at the shop and it was back as well. No hesitaion - I bought it. A simply awesome little shooter!

Texas Colt, nice pictures and guns. I rarely to never see guns like that. Most PP and PPS revolvers in my area are older models and are quite worn.

Thanks Moonclip.
I see plenty of the older, well worn PPs too. Generally, they are great shooters even if they are well worn. Often they are carried a lot and shot very little.
Both of the guns in the picture are safe queens that rarely get shot. I think my MKV was factory test fired only. I have not shot it... yet.

I have 2 PPS both built in the 50's, 1 in 38 special w/5" barrel and 1 in 32 N.P.(read 32 S&W Long) w/4" barrel. Fantastically fun and comfortable to shoot. I cast and load my own for both and both are more accurrate than I can shoot.

I have a MKV. Great little gun. You can use K-Frame speedloaders for it (HKS10).

I remember drooling over the MkV for quite a while in the 90s. Just wish I'd had the money for it.
My 1970 edition DS satisfies the itch, mostly.

colt1903, you're killing me with that Diamondback!!! What a beauty!
I had one just like it and, like a dummy, I sold it a few years ago. Now they're worth 3 times what I paid for mine :banghead:

My pops has a Diamondback .38. I love it. I have been wanting a Diamondback .22 LR... just don't have the expendable funds.
I may be picking up a .38 PP Special in a couple of days. This would be my second revolver and my first Colt.
