Polishing up a Ruger MK III?

So, I've seen a number of threads (mostly on the revolver forum) of folks who have taken a soft cloth and some Mother's Mag Polish or Flitz to their wheelguns, and gotten them mighty nice looking.

I'm currently off of school for a few months, and in between finding a job and practicing my baking skills (fledgling baker, here) I need a project.

Now, I'm never going to be getting rid of this gun, so I'm not worried about affecting the resale value. It's a perfect shooter, so I'm not worried about affecting the shootability. I'm just wondering how shiny I can get my well-loved .22 tackdriver.

I guess what I'm asking, is if there's any reason that I shouldn't start polishing? I'm not touching the internals, just doing a little cosmetic upgrading.

What say the forum?

I don't know anything about the MKIII.
The barrel on my CZ75B has an ugly coating that provides some protection from heat. The rear side of the barrel is exposed in the slide opening and looked like crap. The tip was also exposed about 1/8".
I used a slow speed dremel with a 'loose-flap cloth wheel' and 'white rouge' to polish these exposed areas. It came out like chrome and so far (6-700 rds) it still looks great. I also very lightly polished the bbl feed ramp.
You can remove too much metal if you're not careful. Keep the job cosmetic.

I'm not going to be messing with the internals in any way, shape or form, but thanks for the reply.

Personally, I can't see any reason not to polish the outiside of the gun, just wanted to run it past the braintrust here first to be sure.

If that is what floats your boat then shine er up. When you are done then get a fancy pair of stocks for it and maybe a nice holster.

Well, assuming your Ruger is stainless; then Mother's Mag Polish is the choice for you. Right now I'm working on a S&W snubbie that's on its 6th polishing application. Flitz is okay, it's just that it doesn't bring out that same level of shine that Mothers does. Just keep it away from any blued parts and try to keep it out of the internal working parts. Other than that, have at it and post some pix when your done.
