It looks like a modified German Grease gun but I have no real idea just.... you get the point

Ditto; I don't think this one was ever adopted, but it shares the basic design with the M3, and the molded stock and furniture with the Owen.

How are you supposed to shoulder that thing?

It looks easy to shoulder using a "high head" like older American shotguns.

Looks like something you'd find on the set of Firefly.

If a real gun and not a prop or mock-up, my guess is that it's definitely Australian, probably an experimental Owen Mark II variant.

It seems to be basically a rearrangement of the Owen parts into a more conventional layout, and probably lighter because the receiver looks shorter. It eliminates the primary disadvantage of the Owen -- that awkward, top-mounted magazine that blocks the shooters view and requires offset sights.

It also gives up the primary advantage of the Owen -- that same awkward, top-mounted magazine that allows easy-to-load magazine springs (gravity is your friend), and the bottom ejection which helped keep the gun clean and jam free and made it pretty much ambidextrous.

Here's a link a more Owen-like experimental Owen Mark II (http://cas.awm.gov.au/TST2/cas_disp_pkg.pr_detailed_scr?surl=183291821ZZZLAOVHEVSOM&acid=2000&pi_query_id=15199872&pi_umo_id=720749&ps_selected_coll=ALL&ps_view_type=BRIEF&current_page_number=1&ps_access_level=Public) that was not adopted.

That link expired, apparently, because of the way their database works. It's from the Australian War Memorial (http://www.awm.gov.au) and their Collections Database (http://cas.awm.gov.au/). Lots of good info on Owen guns, Evelyn Owen, pics of the Owen gun in the field, etc.

Considering that site is in some sort of oriental henscratching I would suspect it of being a dummy for sale to people in a repressive jurisdiction.

Here is the page that the pic came from: http://www.gun-world.net/australia/owen/owen.htm

And here is the page in English (thanks to Google Translate): http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gun-world.net%2Faustralia%2Fowen%2Fowen.htm&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=zh-CN&tl=en

The caption to the pic in question reads, according to Google Translate, "1944 trial for a bomb beneath Owen submachine gun, Lithgow museum." Since I don't see an underbarrel grenade launcher, I'll assume that "bomb beneath" means "bottom-mounted magazine."

This is acually a very comprehensive page. Max P., you may have a competitor if they put up an English (or Russian) version. :D

Ownmole, the Chinanet is the thing in itself ;) furthermore, more than few articles on gun-world.net site have references to my own site ;)
And, finally, the more fair competitors (by fair i mean that they have original texts, not some copy&paste) - the better. Makes me wanting to update my own site more often, and with better stuff ;) ;)

Could it be that magazine well could rotate to make transport easier and more compact, and as a safety device?
I think there was some other SMG with that same feature.

I would be unheard of for a WWII gun to be spray-painted with glossy camo finish. Or any other camo finish like this one.

Looks like a modern mock-up, prop, or dummy gun to me.

The cocking handle, paint job and furniture are the same as on an Owen gun that I've fired.
