I was reading Guns and Weapons magazine and there was story about the FN model Five-seveN IOM.
from the magazine
The Five-seveN is available from FN for government or law enforcement sales only.
Why can't we buy the Five-seveN IOM? The Five-seveN IOM has a 10 round mag.:(
Is it the 5.7x28mm SS190 ammo?

Is it the 5.7x28mm SS190 ammo?
Yep ... the ammo is designed to defeat body armor, therefore the BATFE doesn't want us surfs to possess it.
If they made a .22lr version of this gun I think they could sell them like hotcakes.

I read about it a while back on the FN site....looks like it takes the Sig/Tokarev theory to a whole new level.
Next someone will neck down a 475 Max case to a 17 HMR bullet
33 gr's of bullet going 100000 FPS.......:D

Here's a descriptive link

Designed solely to fire armor-defeating ammunition with a 20-round magazine , even I don't see much use for this outside of LEO/Military apps. If BGs get this armored, I'll personally go to rifle.
There was a story last year where a police supervisor issued a FN Five SeveN overpenetrated and put two rounds thru another officer behind a fence.

FN is working on a non-AP load for the 5.7x28. Since the AP was the cartridge's main selling point, I don't know where this leaves FN's marketing department.
Here's another thread on the five-seven:

I've fired one of the full-size FN's, and I have to say it had one of the worst triggers I've ever had the misfortune to experience on a production pistol. Turned me right off the gun...

There's no reason why we can't have a non-"AP" version of the 5.7 ammo. Just load up a conventional bullet and you're good to go.

Plus they have piss-poor real world results. A nearby SWAT team shot an armed assailant 7-8 times with a FNP90 and the bad guy kep on a shooting. Shot him with a G23C and he dropped. Great penetration, poor stopping power / I.E. good for shooting bad guys with ballistic vests, bad for everything else. I have heard of other agencies having similar results.

It's "neat" on a mechanical level (it functions as a blowback, and they have to coat the ammo with a dry lube to make sure it functions properly), but it sure is UGLY, and the trigger is nothing to love, either. I had the chance to shoot it next to the P90 at an FN demo, and can't say it really offered much over anything else out there (except for the AP ability).

It's not really blowback. FN calls it delayed blowback and the mechanism behaves a little like a recoil system. I found this thread in a search that details it:

Maybe some of those guys will post on this one.

my $.02 on the whole 5.7mm thing.
remember, all this started in the late 1980s as the military Personal Defense Weapon project.
the idea was to create light, compact and handy weapon, suitable for non-riflemen use, and capable to hurt enemies wearing body protection means.
The 5.7x28mm ammo was devised as a compromise between low recoil, good penetration and acceptable stopping power. but remember, it was acceptable for military - at least for those who do the thinking for military.
The police / SWAT operations are completely different strory, where stopping power is a major factor, and you can trade the range and some weigh for better stopping power, because you don't have to haul your PDW for weeks, while loading 5" shells into your mortar or driving helo at treetops.
as for design, P90 is a siple bolowback design with interesting magazine design (with somewhat questionable reliability) and 100% ambidextrous handling.
The Five-seveN is a delayed blowback pistol.
Both, IMO, had very little to do in police work, unless you want to look like Stargate tooper.
if you need good penetration - just buy some 7N21 or 7N31 9x19mm AP ammo for your loved H&K MP5 or Sig P226 or Glock17. This had stopping power of standard 9mm bal ammo (not that much, but still better than 5.7mm) and penetration at least equivalent to 5.7mm. And you still have weapon compatible with best available JHP slugs for unarmored adversaries. The maximum range is slightly lower than of 5.7mm, especially from P90, but why you need 200m range in SWAT operations? if it came to that sort of things, you'd better go for full-size rifle in .223 or .308, that will do much better...
so, again, IMO the whole 5.7mm thing belongs to the military PDW world, and is far from being good for police / swat job.
