Having trouble with barrel swap. Sig P229

I bought the Sig P229 Elite .40 cal.

I just bought a Sig (factory original ) 357 sig barrel.

However, when I install the new barrel the slide will not fully re-attach. It catches right where the takedown lever lines up with the slide-catch grove.

There are now dents and scratches on the bottom left and right sides of the feed ramp. Almost as if the feed ramp bangs against the slide somewhere.

Near as I can tell (aside from the barrel diameter) both barrels are identical in size. Side by side, I cannot see any obvious flaws. Why would one work, and not the other?

Is it more likely a bad barrel or a bad gun? And here I thought Sig was hi quality.
Appreciate any help.

i have a p239 in 40. i have drop in 357 and a 9mm from efkfiredragon.com. they are clearly marked 'conv'. as in--357SIG conv 40: 9mm conv 40. yours could be caused by a difference in the chambers size....have you micked them side by side? is the OD of the 357 bbl the same as the 40? if it is smaller you are ded right there. there is more to it, but hope this helps get you a answer. good luck.

Is the barrel locked fully up and centered in the slide when you are installing it?

well this is my 18th gun, so I am pretty sure I am putting the barrel in correctly.

The gun was originaly .40 but the 229 slide will accept the 229 .357 Sig barrel (even says so in the manual). Mags, slide, and frame are all the same. Supposed to drop right in, especialy using a Sig factory barrel.

I put them right next to each other, and they seem to match perfectly.

I would think it should back together. But as I slide the slide back on the frame, it goes most of the way, and then stops with a solid *thunk*.

:/

Do you have a mic or dial calipers to check the dimensions of the two barrels? Never assume that the factory got it right if indeed they were supposed to be drop in. Always assume the need for at least minimal fitting until your particular conglomeration of parts proves otherwise.

Well, congrats on your 18th gun:)
The reason I asked if it was locking up fully is that it sounds like the feed ramp is hitting the locking insert. If the barrel is locking up fully in the slide it shouldn't hit the insert when sliding on to the frame. If it isn't locking up fully, the barrel probably needs some fitting.
BTW; welcome to the forums.
