When did this new XD debut???

I just checked the springfield armory site and was immediately treated to an intro to something called the XD(M). I was quite confused. It seems they have done a few things like adding a new loaded chamber indicator, improving the trigger reset, no need to pull trigger to disassemble, new sights, and improving the ergos.

This has me a bit excited because I've so badly wanted to like the XD but just never could because I didn't like the way it felt in my hand! Now they have reshaped things a bit and done the changeable backstrap thing.

So my question is was this at SHOT show? And why didn't anybody tell me it was coming out???

I think it debuted at the NRA convention, which was last weekend. There are ads in this month's American Rifleman.

I think the biggest upgrade is 16rds of .40 in a magazine. That's pretty good. It also has a 4.5" barrel which is in between currently offered lengths. I don't think the loaded chamber indicated is new, just improved.

Initially it appears to be offered only in .40.

I think the most important upgrade is the swappable backstrap! I really want to check them out in hand. The price is kinda steep right now but I think once they release the .45 and 9mm the price will drop.

That swappable backstrap was one of the big things that the Ruger SR9 had going for it. I was looking at getting one but I dont know now, especially since I heard there are problems with them. This improved XD looks pretty good. Does anyone know if this is going to replace the existing XD lineup or is it going to be sold as another model??

Netgarr, it was introduced last weekend at the NRA show. I shot it in March, and we produced the video Springfield is sending out on the XD-M. I like the pistol.

You can see Rob Leatham shooting the XD-M (ah, it's Rob, not the pistol, that makes him so fast!) at www.guntalk.tv. Click on Watch Now, and New Releases. We have 10 short videos on the XD-M there.

Tom, did they give you any idea when the 9mm would be released?

They are very reluctant to name a date. It seems to me that the 9mm is easy, but then, don't have to make the barrels, mags, etc. <grin>

Besides, there's no hurry when the .40 is selling so well.

Still, I would bet that it's before the end of the year.

The .45, on the other hand, is a big question. Probably, maybe, someday. Different frame, which makes it a whole different gun. Not easy to do that. I would not expect that (assuming it ever happens) until 2009. If. I'm hoping!

According to Springfield's Rob Leitham and another guy whose name escapes me , they will keep the existing line of XD. This is just another model.

The XD45 is much newer than the rest of the lineup anyway. I'm curious how many rds of 9mm the "M" model will hold if it can hold 16rds of .40!

Does anyone know if the barrel on the "M" model, which they are boasting about, is still hammer forged or is something else? They say it's leading edge tech but don't say how or why.

I was looking in my cleared XD9 the other day and noticed that the inside of the barrel has a nice mirror polish even after firing 200rds without cleaning. Seems to be well made. Actually, seems very similar to the quality and design of the barrel on my Steyr M9.

I heard about this on Down Range Radio, its cool to see. I know I have posted on here a number of times on why I chose the M&P over the XD but this new model XD solves a lot of the issues. Sounds like I may need a XDm 9mm to go with my M&P .40 eventually.
