I am looking for a cane that is suitable for walking on and useable as a piece of SD equipment.

Any suggestions I am on a 50 dollar budget could push more but no more than 100 inc shipping. It would need to be a round to[p rather than pistol advice would be appriecitated it is to replace a battered dress but useable cane which wll become/is the daily cane.

Go by your nearest farm supply store. Most all of them stock inexpensive ($12-15) hardwood canes used for showing livestock. All they need is to be trimmed to the proper length to fit you and to have a crutch tip slipped on to be street ready. With no metal at all on/in the cane you can even take it on a plane (at least you could last time I flew).

If you want you can open up the crook with a wood rasp by flattening the inside curl closest to the shaft with a wood rasp. Rounding the horn to a blunt point doesn't hurt either, but will make the cane more effective for hooking moves.

Rockstar.esq is capable of making a cane with a claw hammer for a handle. Surprisingly comfortable, and there is obviously some utility to be found.

First off, let me start with the most important (at least to me): STAY AWAY FROM SWORD CANES!!!

Sword canes are WAY more of a liability than they are a benefit in terms of usefulness as well as legality. I have a Cold Steel City Stick and I cannot believe how strong it is. The pistol grip is quite comfortable as well as an amazing addition to delivering good heft.

I'll add a voice of support to alaskanativeson's. No sword canes! None. Nope. Nada. Unless you just want to collect interesting canes or you KNOW that you can legally carry one in your state, just say no.

Lee's right on target with the recommendation of getting a good solid stock cane. They can be had for $10 (http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=61&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=cane) and come in hickory and oak (mostly oak). You can saw off the crook of you want a straight cane and mount a good solid door knob for a handle (if you're remotely handy) or you can go "horsey" (http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=5407&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=5407) and get one for $30 with a great brass hame as the cap on top.

For something with a little more dress - the Cold Steel City Stick. Your choice of head - some cast in stainless, with a seven layer wrapped fiberglass shaft they claim can't be broken. It is not a sword cane, which can be a very complicated situation if detected in, say, a courthouse, or boarding aircraft.

I had a compound fracture of the left leg involving a titanium insert ( see username ) and used this for about six weeks. I never made an attempt to break it - the cane - but really doubt it could be done by human hand. It took a bandsaw to shorten it to the correct ergonomic length for me.

I got mine with the polished Ball head - and wish it could be replaced with a more comfortable crook handle. Ball heads are great for show, but uncomfortable in long term use as they really don't fit the human hand well.

The SD side of cane use can be searched over the internet - one good resource I found and printed was a copy of self-defense with cane originally written in the 1890's, the nadir of cane use. Along with pugel stick combatives (bayonet training) and oriental stick fighting, I believe you will can easily outclass an opponent armed with most edged weapons, and some with firearms, if within striking distance.

If there is any first rule of using the cane, it would be similar to any weapon - never touch anyone with it for any reason unless it is in self defense. Cranky old geezers like me swinging a cane around will get them banned, especially at airports, where a lot of us can use one if necessary.

They can be a great resource in that vast region where you need something, and a firearm is just not tolerated.

Strangely I find the ball really comfortable and I have the sd side cobverede, as for sword canes in this "liberal" bastion of peace and freedom no guns, no penkinves, sword canes not carried have to be antique.

Yes people are getting shot, I know ban guns then all guns will not be on the streets. Cretin.

Sorry for the rant it just annoys me that if i go into town with my modelling kit to sit and do some conversion to miniatures and I get stopped if the JBT wants to nick me he can for possesion of a scalpel outside of a licked steel box and I would get the same punishment as someone walking the streets with a machete wanting to stab someone.

And Tirod Bolt and pin in hip and as of now the pin n in the ankle has been removed. Remember they have the technology they can rebuild us. :neener:

This may be a bit more crude than you're looking for, but my dad collects walking sticks, has literally hundreds, but this is the one he actually uses.

42,

As odd as this may sound, talk to your orthopedic surgeon about getting a rejected ball joint (my buddy's dad had to have his hip replacement replaced and they gave the Ti "joint" to him as a souvenir) and having it mounted onto a stout hickory cane.

That is odd! Aside from being useful, that would be a heck of a conversation starter...

That would be cool, although it wouldn't be as good of a conversation starter as my line
"I am technically a cyborg."
(Technically, I am)
As for canes, the basic cane like HSO posted will work well. If you want something with a little more class, look at CS city sticks.

I am technically a cyborg

Man, I want to be a cyborg. Onboard targeting systems would be the raddest thing ever, and as a single guy, it would be great to have a database of pickup lines and sweet nothings to reference.

The ball type handles like the plain CS City Stick has is also uncomfortable for me, the pistol grip one is a little better. Here's what the pistol grip looks like along with a picture of one of the handles removed.

I was wondering, does anyone knew where I could get a custom handle made for this cane? What I'd really like is a fritz-style handle (http://www.walkingequipment.com/derbyfritz.htm) made of brass, titanium, or wood as long as the handle was good snd sturdy. I'm not a small guy and if I'm putting my weight on it I want to know the handle will hold. I'm sure the stick will.

OP said he is comfortable with the ball handgrip; and for the $50 price range, consider Cold Steel Walkabout. Large head, ferrule tip, and is more stout than a lot of smaller-diameter canes. And Cold Steel is not the only place to buy Cold Steel products. ebay can be your friend.

Just a thought.

I've seen that handle - it doesn't appeal much. Something on the lines of a recurve with subtle hammer head comes to mind.

And the threaded attachment didn't go unnoticed.

I've also heard of recycled hip joints being used for a cane, the larger ones are rare. It would be a conversation piece.

Right now the screw heads aren't much of a problem. I quit wearing laceup boots when I retired from the Reserves, which helped a lot. Whacking the two in my ankle reminds me on occasion. I just wish the orthopedist had put my foot back on straight! :D

Yeah. 110 %, except when your natural valve was leaky.
But you gotta make the most of things.

But the ticking...the ticking...you never get used to the ticking...

I have to undergo a knee relacement. The doc says I will be on a cane for a while. I am using this as an excuse to purchase a functional cane that will also be useful as a defense piece. Suggestions?

A standard hickory cane may be all you need. The "mastercane" derivative has a larger bow (and a bunch of frivolous decorations, for those interested) and may be more effective as a SD so, if you can get your health insurance to chip in, may be worth your investigation.
Rattan is a formidable cane material as well.
I just hang around the DAV and ARC stores to find a hickory cane and cut it to size. (Creaky left leg at 59 yrs old.)

thanks Doug,
would you recommend the classical hook or the kind with the right angle handle.

While the canes at Canemaster are appealing looking they are not the kind that you really want for self defense. Neither are the door knob style canes. Hooked or knobbed canes limit the canes potential as a weapon You are far better off obtaining a cane that has its handle coming straight off of the main shaft at a 90º angle like that of a tonfa or a police PR-24. Chris Koontz (http://www.americancane.com/) Offset-T Canes are a good example of a quality fighting cane his Birdshead cane is also acceptable but not as good though it is better looking. You want to be able to use the handle to grasp to block with and have a good grasp on to spin and swing with. Getting police training for a PR-24 or a course in Kendo, Kobu-do, Bo-Jutsu, Jo-Jutsu (not Jiu-Jitsu) would be very beneficial in the getting the most use of a canes weapons potential. There is a reason that fighting canes and the PR-24 are shaped they way the are with the 90º handle with some practice and experience you will quickly see why. The same as with guns get the proper tool and training than practice. The really nice thing about canes is that they send the wrong message. Instead of being prepared to deal with an armed and able opponent the BG underestimates your seeing a feeble disabled victim. So the element of surprise is on your side and surprised they are when you clean their clock for them. The look on their face is almost worth the hassle. They are taken so far of guard they do not even know what hit them.
