I'd like to add an inexpensive sight to my Mossberg 500 as it only has the bead sight. Suggestions?

Well what is it for? I have a ribbed 28" ithaca barrel that came with a fiber optic rear two dot and a bead front. I didn't like shooting clays with the rear so I took it off. If you haven't tried the rear sight, try it before you do anything permanent.

It's the 18.5" barrel. HD & range use

Nothing beats a bead for close, fast work once the shooter is used to it. Run a few cases of ammo through your new shotgun and see.

for you tactical shotgunners out there, which do you think is better overall, ghost rings or rifle sights, if those were the only two available to you? Anywhere to get decent quality ghost rings for cheap?

For a dedicated working gun, I like ghost rings, MMCs to be specific. Rifle sights on the barrel of a multipurpose (i.e., by swapping barrels) gun makes it more versatile if you only have one gun, then you don't have a rear sight on the receiver.

Nowhere I know of. A good set will cost about a C note and then there's installation on top of that. IMHO a proper installation includes silver soldering on the front sight, which means refinishing the barrel. Not cheap... . Likely the best bet for GRs is to get them as a factory installed option.

I had the same dilema.....18.5 plain barrel. There are lots of aftermarket sights for rib barrels......but choices for plain barrel is limited. I also wanted to use my HD gun for deer slugs.
After much research I decided to purchase a replacement barrel with rifle sights installed. Fully adjustable they work just fine. I sold my bead barrel and my total cash outlay was about $50.
Decent sights are at least $50 plus smithing fees.

Try this: Go directly to mossberg's website, and buy the ghost ring rear sight, cheap. Then go to MMC's website and get their banded front. They work VERY well together, you will need to do no gunsmithing, and the total cost will be less than $100.

I agree with Mr. McCracken's advice.

is there an easy way to convert rifle sights to ghost sights for cheap on a Benelli barrel?

These mount(epoxy) right over your existing bead sight, with the added benefit of tritium. Easy installation no gun smith required.

I ordered a 18.5 Mossberg slug barrel with Williams rifle sights from Numrich for $100.
Worked out real well for me.

magic, I never personally used them, but I know people that swear by those XS sights.
Another good suggestion was selling your barrel and using that money towards a new barrel with rifle sites.

Servn99, a ghost ring or its less buzzworded sib peep sight.
Like many older shooters, open sights are hard to use and get a tight focus with. A peep and front blade is quite fast and accurate.

mikkeeh, they sell that as a kit not just the rear

Keep in mind the top of your 500 is already drilled and tapped for a scope mount but I am thinking your side saddle might be using the holes, (Guessing). I have a 500 persuader and i love the basic bead sight that came with the gun, whatever you do stay away from the Hi Viz fiber optic front sights, pure junk.

I like the HiViz sights. My shotgun does have a ribbed barrel, but I understand that you can get replacement for the beads in unribbed barrels.
