My 700p trigger is nothing short of crappy. Is it even worth messing with or should I just opt for an after market. If it is worth messing what works, if not what would you recommend.

This rifle wants to shoot alot better than the .75 that it's spittin' out now. It just needs the trigger to do it.

Thanks,

Someone who knows what they are doing should be able to improve it greatly in about 15 minutes and charge no more than $25 for it. If you have a friend familiar with the triggers they would probably show you how for free. It is not hard, but I would not attempt to explain it without detailed pictues or video.

I would try this first, if it does not work as well as you like you have not lost much and can try a replacement trigger later.

Does it have the new x-mark trigger? If so it adjusts differently. The x-mark usually only needs the pull weight screw adjusted. I own a Timney trigger and IMO a properly adjusted factory trigger(old style or new) are just as crisp as the Timney. The only thing they lack is they cannot be adjusted as low as some aftermarket triggers. This shouldn't be a problem on a tactical rifle like a 700p as most shooters generally don't want those as light as a benchrest gun. My 700p with x-mark trigger is set at 2 3/4 lbs and is very crisp. It came at 5 1/2lbs and I simply adjusted the pull weight screw.

All triggers are different though so proceed at your own risk. If you do adjust it makes sure to try the slam fire test by ramming the bolt home, and do the bounce test.

A google search will give several instructional pages on how to adjust 700 triggers.
