Being the broke and bored college student that I am and wanting to both protect myself and have some fun with my pop I was wondering what could be said about using this gun for skeet/clay/trap/hunting?

My uncle said he had a good time with a $120 20ga 18.5" bbl wallyworld special he took bird hunting(but he's an exceptional shot in my experience). Assuming I can practice and assuming that I've already held one and like the weight, rack, LOP, feel, etc is a pump action pistol grip 18.5" bbl in a 12ga going to be useful for both HD and Hunting?

Secondly, besides looking cool (I love puns) what does a heat shield do?

Thanks in advance,
Z

You can give it a try, with practice you will do fine. Try the maverick 88 at wallyworld, its around 175 bucks out the door and it has a 24-26 inch barrel and you can pick up an 18 inch mossberg barrel most of the time for around 50 bucks so then you have a skeet shooting barrel and a home defense barrel for under 250 bucks. Then all you have to do is spend every penny you find on ammo because shotguns are a BLAST < lol

oh and the heat shield is just for when you fire alot of rounds through the gun the barrel gets pretty hot and it has holes that let the shield stay cooler so no burned hand ( and it looks awesome lol )

I have the 500 combo with wood stocks. I mostly use the 18.5" barrel. When doing some informal clay shooting on my brother's farm, I can usually hit pretty well with the short barrel. However, I never tried shooting with the pistol grip, so I doubt I would do as well with it. Someone posted in another thread, that Big 5 has a sale on the Moss 500 combo. If you have one in your area, it might be worth looking at. Unfortunately, I don't, so I had to pay a good bit more for mine. I'm still happy with it though.

My friend has a Persuader with the Knoxx CopStock. We used to shoot wobble trap with it, great fun. Provided you shoot at very short range clays, it'll do fine.

I have hunted upland game with my 18.5 inch Remington 870 Police and it works pretty well. Biggest thing is that short barrel will be pretty much louder than a longer barrel. Good for quick, close flushes but not as good for longer passing shots. I'll use it again, though. I think in a pump 22-24 inches is pretty perfect for the hunting I do.
