Which pocket gun caliber to go with?

May 26, 2008, 04:06 PM
I am contemplating picking up a Kel-Tec. I am leading towards the PF-9 b/c I already have a Stoeger Cougar in 9mm (and a 1911 .45 and .38sp). I have considered the Kel-Tec .32acp or the .380 auto because of them being smaller than the PF-9. Would it not make more sense, though, to get the 9mm since I already have one and would only need to stockpile 9mm, .45acp, and .38sp rather than adding another cartridge to the mix. Plus, the 9mm is a less expensive and more effective (in most accounts) ammo than the .32 and .380 to boot.

I know I may have answered my own question already, but I would be interested in others opinions as to what you would do.

For pocketgun, I carry a Kel-Tec P-32.
It's lightweight and small size ensures I can pocket carry it while wearing anything from swimming trunks to BDUs.

So far, I am satisfied with the P-32's reliability and carryability.
I am also comfortable relying on the .32ACP for self-defense.

I may upgrade to the .380ACP, depending on how I like the new Kahr Arms P-380.
The Kel-Tec P3-AT and Ruger LCP are not enough of an upgrade for me to leave the Kel-Tec P-32.

If you want a 9x19mm handgun to pocket carry check out the Kahr Arms PM-9 and Walther PPS.
For me, I find the PM-9 and PPS to be too heavy for effective pocket carry. But, they're great for IWB carry.
However, some people find they are great for pocket carry. So, go out and check them out yourself.

at least a 380. just so much more ammo variations out there THAT ARE BETTER THAN THE 32. The kt 32 and 380 are the same size and is the Ruger lcp 380. the new kahr p380 will even be smaller, so why a 32?????

I seem to have no issues carrying my kahr PM9. I also don't put the pm9 n the same class as the 32 or 380 either.

The Kahr PM-9 is the perfect pocket package.

I have 2 P3AT's and a P11. A P3AT is always in my pocket either as a primary or mostly as a BUG. I have carried the P11 in my pocket but it's just a little too big for that.
The P3AT's are the only guns I have in 380 so I just keep a couple hundred rds on hand. I only shoot a mag or 2 every couple months just to be sure it is functioning ok

I have the P3AT and love it. It is my "always with me" gun. It is light and small and never too heavy for my pocket....simply great pocket rocket...

Kel Tec in 32 I have both and I don't belive their reall that much difference between them from these little pistols .Other than 380 has a lot more recoil

I carry the P3-AT on a very regular basis. It fits nicely in my back pocket and have found it to be reliable. The finish has even held up after 1 1/2 years of regular carry. 380 is on the weak end for self defense, but it is adequate, especially in a pocket gun. The p3-AT still fits nicely in the back pocket of jeans or slacks with the magazine extension.

I lucked up and just picked up a Ruger LCP. I was looking for a Kel-Tec P3-AT when I walked in the store they had just gotten the LCP. I had never really looked at buying a Kel-Tec before because when I looked at them they just felt cheap and rough. That was not the case with the Ruger. I must say I really like the LCP and see myself carrying it a lot because most of the time I cannot carry anything bigger.

I put 75 rounds through it and had one jam near the end of the session using American Eagle FMJ. I am not really worried about it because I did not clean it before shooting and it was very dirt and had ton of oil in it. I am sure these factor played a role in the jam. I will be putting more rounds through it very soon and will save my review until then.

I looked at the P11 and IMHO it is to large for pocket carry.

A P11 rides in my pocket constantly. Occasionally, I have a Grendel P12 .380 I tote or my .38 alloy snub, but usually the P11.

With how small the .380's and 9mm's are these days, there's not much of an excuse to carry anything smaller.

+1 on the kt 380 idea....these are SD pocket guns, not range plinkers....the cost of ammo is nill...just enough to make sure it works, and get use to it...gpr

For strictly "pocket guns", I have gone to a KEL-TEC P3AT .380 auto;
which I also use as a "BUG", to my daily carry 1911 .45 ACP~! ;)

It depends on the size of your pockets. I believe in carrying the largest gun/caliber possible.

I have multiple pocket guns and alternate between my S&W 340PD, KT P32, Beretta 950BS and a NAA Mini .22mag.
