View Full Version : Revolvers, Autoloaders and the BRAIN....

A number of you may have seen this, but proceed anyway.

I'm curious to see if there's any sort of correlation between what people see (below) and what they prefer in the way of handguns.

In the animated GIF, you will see the image of a young woman rotating clockwise, counterclockwise, or you'll see her go first one say, then the other.

http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh198/jriler/Ballet_Test-1.gif

Please do the following:

1. State which way you see the woman rotating.
2. State your preference for revolvers or autoloaders.
3. Do you prefer single action or double action?

There may be no correlation whatsoever, but this is a brain test and it may tell us something!

Counter clockwise (I can't even force myself to see it the other way)
I generally prefer single action auto loaders.

Are you serious?! I can only see her rotating clockwise. I can't make myself see her any other way. Oh, and I prefer DA revolvers. So far, it's a pretty strong correlation, LOL! I tend to think you'll need an N>2 for any stats, though. I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread. Could be interesting.

Maybe also whether you're a left or right handed and which you shoot with, and which eye is dominant. I'm a leftie, right eye dominant, and shoot rightie.

Eh, this is nothing more than an optical illusion. It has nothing to do with any sort of brain function beyond that.

counterclockwise.

Preference for autoloaders.

Mild preference (looking at what I have) for DA/SA autoloaders.

Revolvers, DA.

CCW.
I like both, but lean more towards autos, SAO or DA/SA.

Interesting, I am positively Left eye dominate. With reference to the clock being on the floor with my left eye she goes CW. Your eye is divided into left and right halves, so it might depend upon viewing angle.
Best,

at first I see her counterclockwise, but if I force myself, I can make her change directions.

Okay, this has nothing to do with left/right eye dominant. It has to do with left/right brain dominant. If you see it going CCW, you're left-brained, analytical and tend to see the parts of a problem. If you're right-brained, you tend to be more creative, imaginative and you see problems as a whole.

I'm not making any claims myself, but those came with the picture.

And I assure you, the image does go either way. Some have thought I was pulling their legs, but right-brained people apparently see the spatial suggestions of this 2D photo one way, whilst the left-brained people see it just the opposite.

I can switch it at will. Some people use this image as a brain exercise.

So far I see no strong correlation, but do continue!

Strictly clockwise.

I prefer semiautomatics for carry, but I love shooting double action revolvers for fun. I wouldn't hesitate to carry a revolver, I just can't reason why I'd carry a gun the same size with less than half the ammo that takes longer to reload. I guess you could say I love revolvers, but carry semiautomatics.

Clockwise and I have an affection toward Colt SAA's. Left or right eye dominant, but have worked to gain only right eye dominant.

CW or CCW depends on your point of view, doesn't it? As you are seeing her directly from the side, YOU must decide if she is standing on the clock, or revolving under it.

Or, you guys have crappy video cards and monitors. Cannot imagine her spinning in both directions unless your video is glitching.

So, for me, she is standing on the clock and is rotating CW. My preference goes to guns that function properly. All types are welcome in my safe.

After a while I can make it go either way, with some effort.

DA revolver.

It's just a 2d image that morphs to the left and right repeatedly. Without depth or reference there is no one, correct way.

xring44
June 3, 2008, 07:38 AM
By squinting my eyes slightly, she changes direction, or by tilting my head to look through either the lower part of the eye or upper part of the eye, she changes direction.

I must be doing that in gun stores, one time, I'm madly in love with revolvers, the next thing you know, its all about 1911s.

Truth be told, I like any quality handgun,

CW and all you people who claim to see it CCW are lying or live in the southern hemisphere where I understand clocks go the other way (or is that drains?).

No matter, she is going clockwise. ;)

Clockwise first, then when I looked down at the her shadow and looked up again, it was going CCW. Very cool!

[EDIT] Ok, I downloaded it and played some more. I think she is definitively going CW. I can make her spin either way, but if you get her going counterclockwise, when her leg is pointing away from you, its shadow is closer to you, so I think that's wrong - am I right?

[EDIT2] Well, I suppose she could be "backlit" instead of overhead lighting....

Oh, and I LIKE SA anything for pleasure shooting, but CARRY DA.

June 3, 2008, 08:08 AM
I can make her spin either way, depending on how I think about it.

As for handguns... I like single-actions. Revolver or auto, it doesn't matter.

How's that for confusing? :D

Counter of course. Except now she's clockwise. weird

Wheelguns of course.

I suspect this test would be more applicable to the ancient Colt vs. S&W debate.

I also have no preference really, yet!

The woman is rotation clockwise.

I am right handed, left eye dominant, and I prefer single action autoloaders.

FranklyTodd
June 3, 2008, 11:34 AM
I can make her go either way, but the shadow only matches up clockwise.

If you can make it go Counter-Clockwise, don't you think that the shadow of her "left" leg as it rotates behind her is wrong? It's clearly closer to the viewer, while the leg is actually pointing away.

Jorg
June 3, 2008, 11:40 AM
It has to do with left/right brain dominant.

No, no it doesn't. http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php?p=27

Hell, yes. I agree. There aren't two (or three, or four) ways about it. The image is clearly rotating clockwise. I cannot comprehend how anybody could say that it's CCW or that it's "one way, then another".

It's like presenting a picture of a square and then asking, "Ok, how many see a square, and how many see a circle?".

But, I'm not taking issue with anybody's answers, just venting my frustration at the feeling that there's something here I may not be getting. No matter how obvious it seems, when many people say that they see the image doing something that (in my mind) it is clearly not doing, it rather frightens me and sows a little doubt in my mind about my own perceptions. Which is probably exactly what the exercise is designed to do.

So, my answers are:

Clockwise
Revolvers
Double action

And oh, yes - you said that those who see the woman rotating counter-clockwise are supposed to be the analytical ones? That is a deadly insult! :) I consider myself to be very methodical and rational. More mind games, I guess.
