I only have a S/A and I know of a Mod.19 Texas Ranger. New in wood box. $700. Here is question. Would I be foolish to shoot it? I REALLY want to. Just a few rounds now and then, hopefully. I don't comfortably have the funds to just store it.

Unfortunately, most of us do not have the willpower to shoot "just a few rounds now and then".

Are you buying a shooter or a collector's piece? You decide.

For my $700.00, I'd buy two ex-police department M-65s and have a ball at the range:)

If you shoot any commerative the value becomes a few dollars more than a standard firearm of that same type. That $700 (which seems like a good price) Texas Ranger becomes a $400-450 Model 19.

I've got to say--guns are for shooting first. Then for being pretty. Personally, I would never pay $700 on something to put on a wall or behind a piece of glass.

I'd not buy it for a shooter unless it was much cheaper.

I'm not a collector so anything I buy, I buy to shoot. I've got enough will power to fire a few rounds, just don't have the "won't power" to stop after a few rounds. I can't see me dropping $700 for something to sit in a box.

If you want to have that model in particular for a cool shooter and can afford it, go for it. It will no doubt lose a bit of value, but I've never thought all that much of the "commemorative" edition firearms. Their value hasn't actually gone up that much considering how much they cost to start out with. In fact I expect $700 adjusted for inflation is LESS than it cost back in the early 70's ($700 would have been about $120 to $150)

If you had an actual sidearm used by an actual Ranger in some famous incident, that would be another story. But this is just an homage cooked up by S&W to sell more firearms.

I had one* several year's ago, new in the presentation case
with the Bowie knife included. After year's of remaining in
unfired status, I finally traded it to my brother in-law for a
Ruger M-77 in .338 Winchester Magnum and five boxes of
ammunition. :banghead:

FootNote: My S/N was TR 2723

So, I would say- if the sets S/N is below 250, I would say
don't shoot it, otherwise its your decision; as I have "shooter's",
and "non shooter's" myself. :scrutiny: ;)

Why would you want to buy a gun (and at a very high asking price), that's not meant to be shot, only for the purpose of shooting it occasionally? I mean once you shoot a comemorative you've pretty much lost all the added value that was in it because it was a comemorative. Why not just buy a stock Model 19 and then you can shoot it all you want and not have to worry about hurting its collectors value.

Thanks for replies, The few gunstores around here, have few S/W's and none in perfect shape. I was wondering about this and wanted some thoughts from guys who maybe know this gun and if the value would go down much, after shooting it, considering my thoughts that it may be kind of rare. The price is lower than what I found on the net.

Generally speaking there are collectables, and then there are shooters. Collectables tend to be more expensive, but to hold their value they have to be kept in perfect and unfired condition. You can buy like-new, shooter grade model 19's for around $400, give or take $50. It will be a cold day in a well known warm place before the Old Fuff starts paying collectable prices for a shooter. That however doesn't mean that he won't buy collectables for their intended use. The right collectable can be a good investment, but those that have to shoot anything they buy don't see it that way...

I think they all hate $$$$$$.

You will find all kinds of shooter and collectable Smith & Wesson's.
