Excellent question because just taking the side plate off can result in damage if proper tools and technique are not observed.

Sorry I don't know where to get the info, but will encourage you to learn your guns and become confident that you can at least clean and lube the internals. I'm sure someone at THR can point the way.

www.google.com
Click on 'more' at the top and then on Video in the dropdown menu.

On the video page insert "smith and wesson revolver disassembly" in the search box. The vids that came up were Midway's owner showing various revolver techniques: checkout, cleaning, disassembly, spring kit install, etc.

I did not watch them all, but plan to later on.

Four very important rules:
1. Forget the video's and buy this book:
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=25717&title=THE%20S&W%20REVOLVER%20-%20A%20SHOP%20MANUAL

2. Get good gunsmith screwdrivers that fit the screws.

3. Keep the screws in the order where you get them from. They look alike, but are not.

4. DO NOT try to pry the side-plate off. It doesn't come off that way without damaging it.

5. #1 will explain how to do it.

Go with rcmodel's advice.

no. :) I'm a visual learner. I can read the field manual for stripping an M1 all day long but I didn't understand how to actually do it (and actually get it back together) until I saw a video. Same with detail stripping a 1911. Thanks all the same.

I really like Jerry Kuhnhaussen's books. But I also have the video on tuning the S&W's by Jerry Miculek. It's good, too.

The Kuhnhausen manual is definitely worth the price. It will keep you out of trouble and allow you to understand how a S&W works. +1 on correctly fitting screwdrivers.

Made a bunch of videos years ago with a great Gunsmith/Gunsmithing School Instructor. Now transfered to DVD.

I love this guy. Bob Dunlap.

You can find them for a smidge cheaper on ebay, sometimes on sale at Midway or Sportsman's Guide.

" they don't really show you how to do anything"

Oops, oh well, sorry.

All I ever use is the Kuhnhausen book.

Gun Video "Trigger Job: Complete Action Tuning for Smith and Wesson Revolvers with Jerry Miculek" DVD . This shows how to disassemble tune parts and reassemble. An excellent video.

It isn't video, but here is my write up on changing rebound springs.

Link (http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=33&t=57186)

If you're going to take all the guts out of a S&W, I recommend buying a rebound spring tool from brownells. Doing it without one isn't all that hard, but it can be very frustrating at times. :)

Another vote for the Jerry Miculek video.

I'm a "visual learner" too, when it comes to assembly/disassembly stuff.
I've watched the Jerry Job video like kids watch SpongeBob, but I still go through the steps with him when I do a trigger job.
Oh, and what he does, do. But what he says NOT to do, believe him...

Even so, I'm with rcmodel; you'll still need the proper tools, especially the screwdrivers, and the Kuhnhausen book makes an excellent reference on many levels.
