Last night, I was in the local mall and I was carrying as I normally do. I have observed no posting signs. I carry a Ruger LCP in a Nemesis pocket holster. Several of the stores Theft Deterrant/Metal Detectors went off. Some did and some did not. What is the deal? Have others experienced this and if so, what do you do? I have just ignored this and no one has questioned me.

Had nothing to do with your gun. The anti-theft gates aren't metal detectors, they are RFID readers.

You might have an un-deactivated RFID anti-theft tag in your clothing.

On this trip, I noticed that it was Circuit City that alarmed. Are they any different than others?

I've been carrying for 5 years and have never set off a theft alarm. I was in Circuiit City in Novi, MI on Sunday with both a Colt Combat Commander (at least 2 lb of steel) and a Kahr PM9, and no alarm went off.

Yeah I had that happen... come to find out the (new) holster I had on still had an RFID tag stuck to the inside.

I set them off for years, didn't know why, turned out to be a tag in my wallet.

The annoying thing was, no one in the stores ever looked up when they went off. Must be an effective system. (eyes rolling)

Something else to look for, RFID tags inside your gun someplace. I have seen a few built into the gun itself, you will have to locate and destroy the tag and you should be fine. (if that is what is making you go beep)

Tin foil hats have also been known to set off the alarms...

Whew....thanks for the warning. I was heading out this evening and planning on wearing my tin foil hat (can't be too careful ya know).
Actually, just the other day my wife and I were walking out of a store and the alarm went off. She turned to me and asked, "Did your gun do that?". Uh, nope...it won't set off a detector designed for merchandise tags.
As usual, no one in the store paid any attention to the alarm....we walked right past the manager.

Check your wallet as well, a friend of mine had a similar issue at some stores only to find a thin non-deactivated tag buried in his new wallet.

i had this happen to me a few times until i discovered a jacket i had recently bought still had a thin RFID strip in the interior pocket. removed it, and the trouble went away. while their could be an RFID in your gun, it is much more likely a piece of clothing or your wallet. start with things you've purchased most recently...

Figured it out. Today I went back to said Circuit City, but this I came straight from work and did not have my carry gun. I still set of the detector. They told me it could possibly be my cell phone, so I let the clerk hold my phone and it still tripped. I then handed him my wallet, this time it did not alarm. I looked all through my wallet, but could find no tag. The clerk, then ran my wallet over the "deactivator" and order has been restored to the universe.

(if that is what is making you go beep)I would like to know the make and model of the firearm that you supposedly saw an RFID tag built into it....

There have been recent instances of manufacturers offering the option for military and LEO inventory tracking, but I have never seen one on the general market.

Haha, well that's good that it was fixed - the tag was probably sewn between layers or something...

I was wondering what caused that...

Aren't RFID's based on magnets? If I'm right, you may want to make sure he didn't deactivate your credit card and debit card too.
