I noticed Target is selling this for less than 8 bucks, is it pretty decent and rugged enough for home defense, or is it a piece of junk?

could definitely be used in a pinch.

It's hard to top eight bucks, but given a choice I'd probably take a tomahawk. Think of axes as heavy tomahawks, or tomahawks as very light axes. Also, a 'hawk will have a head/blade shape more suited to frantically hacking at a person.

That said, the store brand camp axe I always played with as a kid made a decent hammer too, so even if you don't hit right you'll still hit.

I was watching cities of the underworld, and they were going through some tunnels in NYC that were used as passages for chinese gangs and such - the guy remarked that, guns being expensive, the gangs did most of their fighting with hand axes.

I'm never happier with a metal handle on an axe than a good wood handle (unless it's an Estwing). I've seen too many come loose.

You could probably pick up a cheap hatchet at the hardware store and check that the handle was solidly in place for the same price.

Agreed. $15 at Lowe's.
Anybody else notice that Target now has little plastic things so you can't slide the Vic, Gerber, Leatherman products off the pegs?
Ironically, you can still do it with the axe and the Rapala fillet knife.

thanks, even if the head of the axe does comes off eventually, that probably wouldn't happen until after quite a few self defense chops, I would have gotten my 8 bucks worth, lol.
