I'm considering buying a 1911. Currently, I own a glock 19 (my first handgun) and like the magazine reciprocity between models of the same caliber. Is the same true with 1911's? Do all single stack mags fit in all single stack models? How about double stack mags/models? Or are mags brand-specific? What does "Colt Government" mag mean? Someone please help me out here:confused: Thanks

Generally speaking all 1911 mags are interchangeable, but there are some "yeah but's" government and commander models use the same magazine, but if you have an officer length then those are shorter, only 6 rounds I believe. The double stack mags I don't know about, I don't own one (I don't own an officer length either :-( ) of course this applies only as long to the same caliber magazines, 45, 9mm, 38 super and such.
That being said, some guns "prefer" magazines from different manufactures Wilson, Chip McCormack, and etc. Each mag maker usually offers several different types of mags... 7 or 8 rounds, steel or polymer follower, base pad or no base pad, and etc. By prefer I mean they work more reliable with one mag or another.
I myself I prefer Wilson 47D, these are 8 round, polymer follower and medium length base pad. Some people don't like 8 round mags for SD use, but I have never had a problem with them, so I use them. Chip McCormack (never spell it right) are also good magazines. I would recommend against buying the really cheap mags you see at the gun show, like 3 for $10, they are not always reliable. Buy from a reputable source and get a good brand and you will be very happy.
My Springfield Armory Mil-Spec likes it's stock Springfield Armory (MetalForm) 7 rounders with the flat, dimpled steel follower. I did replace the mag springs with Wolff 11 pounders, as the stock SA / MetalForm mags have a reputation for having weak springs.
That's what I like. You'll probably get 20 different suggestions before the day is up ;) .
Just goes to demonstrate the wonderful options you have with the 1911 platform. Kinda like a classic muscle car or modern import compact: you can make it into darn near anything you want  !

I will dare to say that most of the problems associated with M1911s (and most other semis) are due to bad magazines. If you start with good magazines and treat them well, your pistol should be very reliable if the time ever comes to need it.
With that said, I prefer Chip McCormick Power Mags. They are economical and use beefed-up mags and have no feed-lip issues. Wilsons are good- but only after you upgrade the springs. Tripp Cobras are great -but they cost 2x that of Chips Powermags.
