I will be getting a Saiga Sporter in 7.62X39 either Fri./Mon. and would like to add another to the list would you suggest the 308 or the 223?
I already have an M1A and a Ruger MK II in 308 so I have "some" milsurp 308 ammo lying around but no 223. I can get the Wolf 223 for $100 per 1,000. What do you guys think?

Well, first off you did good by deciding to get a 7.62x39 first.Thats what AK's are all about ya know? Since you have .308 to shoot now,id suggest getting a .223 just because.Bring in a case of Silver bear from Aim surplus and youll be all set. That will give you 3 good calibers to handle just about any situation.;)

I will agree with Tropical Z and add that the .223 Saiga can be converted to accept 30 round mags. With the .308 Saiga, you are stuck using factory mags.

762X51 What conversion is needed for 30 round mags?

There are 2 different ways it can be done. Mine is converted to take slightly modified Bulgarian 5.45 mags with Robarm followers....they can also be converted to accept Weiger steel mags.

Check out the Russian and build it yourself forums on AK-47.net for info on how to do the conversion yourself. It basically requires riveting in a feed ramp and opening up of the mag well. This can also be done with the 7.62x39 version which will allow it to accept any standard AK mag....with the .223 you are limited to the one type of mag you convert it for. If you'd rather have someone do it for you, contact Chris at AK-USA ( http://www.ak-103.com ). He builds all sorts of AK's from converted Saigas and does wonderful work.
