Cypress June 5, 2008, 06:09 PM I just loaded up some 200 Gr. XTP's for my Kimber and it doesn't seem to like them. It doesn't jam but it is deforming the nose pretty good and even a tight crimp won't keep the bullet from being set back. I tried seating them a little deeper but it didn't help. The bullet mouth is just too wide. Are Speer Gold Dots any more rounded? Any other ideas other than jacking with the gun?

rcmodel June 5, 2008, 06:28 PM If it won't feed XTP's, you probably need to jack with the gun!
About the "roundest" JHP out there is from Remington.

Cypress June 5, 2008, 06:57 PM Forgot to mention that it hasn't had but about 250 rounds through it. The manual says to stick to ball for the first 1000. Will this make that much difference?
rcmodel June 5, 2008, 07:03 PM I suppose it could if the gun is very tight.
Even changing to different mags might allow more upward angle as the round hits the feed ramp and smooth things out.
If you are handy, you could take the recoil spring out and hand-feed the JHP and see what is hitting where. Adjusting the mag feed lips slightly could cure it, or not.
A friends son bought a new Kimber a couple of years ago and I had to do a throat & ramp job on it before it would feed anything except RN-FMJ.
Now, it feeds everything, including empty cases.

Cypress June 5, 2008, 09:32 PM I tried some different mags and it helped SOME. The ramp is just catching the edge of the bullet mouth now. Maybe after 1000 rounds they will feed better. The gun doesn't malfunction with them at all but I'm concerned about bullet set back causing too much pressure. Thanks for the help.
Navy joe June 5, 2008, 11:53 PM Shorten the OAL?
Walkalong June 6, 2008, 12:04 AM XTP factory O.A.L. is 1.230 to 1.235. Try that. Then if it does not feed, something is wrong. Any good 1911 will feed the XTP.
If you are using 8 round mags, try 7 in them and see what happens.
Maybe after 1000 rounds they will feed better. Doubt it. Besides, it should run right out of the box.
rugermack June 6, 2008, 09:01 AM My Colt 1991 had they ramp and throat worked and polished, now it feeds anything. I use the 185 XTPs.
The Bushmaster June 6, 2008, 10:19 AM I bought a Colt 1911 Series 80 new in early 1990. It will eat anything I feed it, including wad cutters. That Kimber should also eat what it is fed new. I would give Kimber a call...See what they say.
strat81 June 6, 2008, 11:26 AM You shouldn't be getting setback. Make sure your sizing die is adjusted correctly and that you aren't belling the case to much with your expander.
And +1 on using a shorter OAL. I load XTPs in 9mm and they do not like longer OALs like RN-FMJs do. For perspective, in 9mm, I load my 124gr XTPs around 1.115, FMJ to 1.135 and WWB 115gr FMJ comes in around 1.155 or so. IIRC, the Hornady 124gr TAP XTP 9mm is 1.110.
Pumpkinheaver June 7, 2008, 04:37 PM I use their 200 gr factory ammo as my carry load and have no nose deformation from feeding.
