I have a glock 23 .40 S&W. Any ideas on what kind of ammo would be safe for apartment use. I just have some standard JHP right now.

reality is, there is no ammo that will not go thru a standard wall and still have enough energy left to kill.

Even a very light target load in a 410 will have np going thru a standard wall.

I understand that nothinging is going to be 100% safe, but I also know that a FMJ will penetrate alot more than a JHP. I am just trying to find out what the best options are for apartments to try an minimize the risk of killing my neighbor.

Standard hollow points or "frangible" rounds will be very unlikely to have enough energy to kill a person IF they hit your intended target first.
Frangible rounds (fang face, extreme shock) get mixed reviews for reasons you could probably find searching for comments about that.
Another probably better (more foolproof at least) option would be a shotgun with heavy birdshot.

Well, just make sure you hit what you're aiming at, and maybe, just maybe, the round will stay in the perp. This is why it is always important to practice, practice, practice with every firearm you own, or at least the ones you plan to use in the event SHTF.

Any round capable of inflicting a casualty on a human is going to zip right through typical apartment building materials. Perhaps this is oversimplifying it a bit, but if you have to shoot inside your apartment, don't miss. Most JHP loadings will not through-and-through penetrate a body, or if they do, will not have sufficient energy left to still go through a wall and hit your neighbor. Also, do a "walk-through" of your apartment, determine where a missed shot will go if it penetrates a wall, and choose your "field of fire" accordingly.

A shotgun with light birdshot is the best you can do. I have a gun video showing a wide range of ammunition shot at sheetrocked walls. Most of the pellets (out of a 12 guage) stayed INSIDE the second wall.

Nothing else even came close. When we have kids running around, that will be our choice.

A JHP that hits drywall without hitting something soft (tissue) first will go through it the same as a FMJ. The big difference is if it hits the bad guy first.

As TAB rightly said, no ammo is truly safe in an apartment. Some better bets would be birdshot (which has marginal effectiveness) or light varmint type bullets in rifles, like a 40gr TAP in .223. I think Hornady and Federal actually publish some info about what their LE-oriented bullets will do in drywall.
