Crowd Beats Driver Who Struck Two Girls, Sets His Car On Fire

An unlicensed, uninsured driver hit two girls with his car and then was beaten and his vehicle set ablaze, Chicago police said.

The girls were treated for cuts and bruises, police spokeswoman Alice Casanova said. Driver Johnathan Hemphill, 33, was taken to South Shore Hospital for minor injuries, she said.

Hemphill's 1996 Chrysler Sebring veered onto a South Side sidewalk last night and struck two girls - ages 3 and 5 - as they played in an open fire hydrant, Casanova said.

When Hemphill got out of the car to check on the girls, he was approached by three men who began punching him in the face and hitting him with a bucket, she said.

Hemphill's car was then set on fire. Casanova said it was unclear if the same men who attacked Hemphill also set fire to his car.

Firefighters called to the scene extinguished the car fire.

Police are still searching for suspects, Casanova said.

A woman who was traveling with Hemphill was not injured.

Hemphill was cited for driving without a license, driving without insurance, driving on the sidewalk and failing to exercise due care when there is a pedestrian in the roadway, Casanova said.

Is this an example of valid street justice, or just another victim?

I don't condone vigilantism, but heck, looks like a good beating to me.

This seems to happen in Chicago quite a bit.

Locals opened a hydrant for their kids to play in the street--

Water gushing across pavement caused vehicle to loose control and visibility problem--

LOW (IE Barely moving) collision with two small kids who got a scratch or two-- NO STITCHES ON CHILDREN -- Treated and released without being admitted at hospital-- Realistically NO INJURIES--

Driver stopped to check on children-- was attacked--(He is still in the hospital)--

I just hope it doesn'thappen to me-- Doyou do what's right and stop to help -- or run for your life

All because irresponsible parents open hydrants to let their young children play in the street--

I hope if any of you guys drive through standing water you'e going solow as to prevent ant real injury to kids playing in the water--

AFTER the incident-- The Fire Dpt sealed the hydrant -- locked the gate after the horses are out-- like usual--

EJ - Boy is this one twisted around--

Sure is. Does anyone who advocates the beating of a motorist and destruction of his property (I'm thinking because he was unlicensed and uninsured, or is it because he was driving a Chrysler?) for an accident that was likely caused by hydroplaning in water (which was there due to someone illegaly opening a fire hydrant)? Do you think the "vigilanties" asked for his license and insurance then, upon discovering he had neither, proceeded to mete out "justice"?

Unless the guy was obviously drunk, I say it is just an example of why you should avoid Chicago. :barf:

If he was unlicensed and uninsured he shouldn't have been driving and this accident would not have happened!:banghead:

Vigilantism is never a good thing.

Assaulting another is arrestable, wonder why the guys didn't stick around after the beating? They knew better and became law breakers themselves.
